Default best first 10 951 upgrades

I have just brought an 86 951 in perfect condition but it is completely stock. The turbo feels great once it kicks in, but that first two seconds it feels like a normal sports car (ie Honda Accord). I just assisted my nephew in test driving a 95 firebird tran-am, and I have to admit that throw your a$$ back in the seat v8 felt great and I am trying to duplicate it (at least the first two seconds of it). Any suggestions? Best 10 upgrades?

Well, unfourtunatly the nature of muscle cars is completly different to small displacement turbo engines. Where your turbo lacks the low end grunt of the trans am, it more than makes up for it in the high rpms. Unless you install a 3 ltr. turbo I doubt you will ever see the low end power of a v8.

Having both, no seconds in the 951 feel like my Accord and I really like my Accord.

If you want the V8 grunt then get a V8. If you want a truly enjoyable, and sometimes frustrating, sportscar then you've picked the right one. Remember, the Firebird will never be a 951.

Chips, Boost controller my 951 beat a Z06 vette as well as any LT1 or LS1 car. Boost lag on launch is in your driving style! Anyway, These aren't drag cars (although thats about all I do with mine) Buya good MAF or MAP kit. A test pipe chips boost controller a catback and you'll have one screamin car! Boost especially big boost is addictive. If wanna spend some jack buy one vitesse's kits I've heard only good things about them and HP is unreal.

1.5 - New BOV or make sure the one you have works.

1. Drivers Education / AutoCross
2. repeat as necessary ~ the 951 is NOT a 'drag' car, and will never be a drag car (well, drop in an LT1 and I'll take that back). Play a game of cat and mouse with your Trans am friend and see how quickly he falls behind once corners are involved. Or (on a track) take him for a top speed run and see what happens when that grunty v-8 falls on its face while you're still pulling strong.

The 951 has strengths and weaknesses just like Every other car out there ~ you can try to blur the line a little with parts upgrades but driver experience will be the best improvement to the car you can make.

how about some suspension mods? everybody always screams hp when talking 951 but unless you can control it, then who cares? at least a few people did mention brakes and lsd.

I'm suprised nobody said this:

Get the car in perfect stock mechanical condition before you upgrade anything. Belts, seals, rollers, waterpump, rod bearings, oil cooler seals, suspension bushings, change all fluids, replace worn shocks/springs, etc., etc. Then if there is cash left get Guru chips and a test pipe.
A 951 in top stock mechanical condition is a pretty damn good car.

#1 is a good auto-x alignment. You'll get rid of most of the 'push', and no weird tire wear either. If I only had $100 to spend, that's what I'd spend it on (assuming nothing mechanical is broken).

Well...

You bought the wrong car. If you want to beat the lights with muscle car instant acceleration, buy a muscle car. If you want to do ANTHING else (like stop or corner too), then you have the right car.

If it's worth a few grand to you, you can get closer to muscle car head snap, but not completely. If you can wait a few seconds, you can have a Turbo that will smoke the Firebird BIGTIME in a stright line, plus do the other things mentioned previously... for a few grand that is.

Here's a comparison. The Firebird will accelerate, but not much else. 10%. The 944T will accelerate, and stop, and turn. 90%.

Where's your priority?

Put some time in reading the board, and learning how to upgrade the 951.

This car is a beast at heart, but you can't expect that much low end torgue from a 4cyl engine. I had a friend with a WS6, that thing had so much torque, but at those higher speeds it just lost it.
