Hello all. Finished installing the timing belts yesterday on the 84 944 NA. I also upgraded the water pump to the late style while in there. However the balance belt is now touching the water pump pulley once tensioned. I measured the diameter of the tapered portion of the pump pulley (see pics) on both old and new and the old measured 2.0" and the new came in at 2.3". Anyone have an idea of what's going on here or encountered the same problem with the updated water pump conversion? Thank you
i wouldnt worry so much about the belt touching the pulley, ive always figured that the flange serves as a guide for both the timing belt and the balance belt.
however notice that on the old pump the shaft sticks out from the pulley whereas the new pump the shaft is recessed?
i wonder if your pulley is seated fully on the shaft?
Which way did you turn the balance shaft adjusting pulley? It will actually tighten two ways... Clockwise or counterclockwise. If you tighten it clockwise, it causes the belt to rise getting closer to the water pump pulley. I believe the manual says to tighten it counterclockwise which will lower your belt.
That was it, Fastbackjack! Spun the tensioner 180 and theres much more clearance on the pump pulley. Now just waiting for the battery to charge so I can start the car. Thanks for the help.
