Default 951 horror story

Hey guys, I'm only new here so I think my first post should be a good one...

I find this 951 in the paper so I go check it out. I like it. I get it checked out by a mechanic and everything is 100% ok aside from some oil seals. no biggie. I drive the car around for a week. No problems.

yesterday I signed my load papers for my first 951.

first bad move.

I get to the guys house that I'm buying the car off and hand over the cheque we sign all the papers and what not, shake his hand and so on.

Get into the car.

Second bad move.

Turn the key.

Third bad move.

The car runs for about 2 seconds and then stops.

"wtf?"

I continue to try and start the car......nothing....

call the roadside assistance.

"oh you've got a loose timing belt!"

F#@K!!

I had owned the car for literally 10min and blam, I've got some bent valve stems....

$4000 repair here I come....

anyway...does anyone know if a slipping or loose timing belt actually DOES valves??

Apparently not a very good mechanic. Or did the seller point you to him?

Is it possible you can take him to court? That's bull****.

Wow, thats a horrooorrr story like no other. OUCH! I feel so bad because I'm afraid of getting caught in the same situation.

I would have the car towed to a local guy who has looked at these types of cars before. Maybee you'll get lucky, and it will be something small like a DME relay. Good luck though.

thats got to make you sick - sorry to hear that.
what does the guy say when the car doesn't start?
did he f@ck it up between the last time you drove it and the time you completed the deal?
did you have any verbal agreement that he would not drive, or that he would deliver that car in the condition you last saw it in and operatiuonal?

just trying to think of anything that might help you if you think you can take it before a judge

Bad News; Yes, there are probably bent valves.
Better News: Repair should be half that amount, ~$2000 is the high side (unless pistons were damaged also)

legally he has to take it back, full refund
look up what your state has for lemon laws, notify him of this, and above all, act as quickly as possible.

Never drive a 944 series Till you do the belt your self. OR check it I really think this needs to be the new advice given here. I am not sure I trust the mechanics any more. very least pull off the top covers.. 10mm socket and short extension and 1/4inch drive.. This happens too often.. any honest owner will not mind...Jmho.. Those 10 bolts or so say so much about the engine...

The 951 uses dished pistons to lower the compression ratio. You may not have done as much damage as you think. Still it too ironic that this happened as it did.

Just curious,
I drive the car around for a week. No problems
Turn the key.
The car runs for about 2 seconds and then stops.
Did the car startup sounding like it did when you were using it before? Did it "seem" different?
I continue to try and start the car......nothing....
How long and how many times did you try? Did it sound/act strange?
call the roadside assistance
who or what might that be?
"oh you've got a loose timing belt!"
Most importantly, HOW did they come to this deduction? Were they just assuming? Or did they actually look and see it was loose and or out of sync.?
Just looking for more info.

What did the seller say when this happened?

Also, where are you located?

Thats why i would NEVER even look at a Porsche seriously without getting a full PPI done by a Porsche mechanic that knows their cars well.

That blows man, the cam only has to move a few degrees out of phase before there's impact it actually would have to jump a couple of teeth. Contact actually occurs ot the outer edge of the dish. Let me know how you make out.

ok, I'd had the car checked out by a 25yr bmw senior technician who has had heaps to do with 951's. Thats why I took it to him. It seems a pulley has gone or something.....he can't look at it till he is back from holidays anyway (jan 5th) He quoted AU$2000 sight unseen....but he said probably it's not too bad. When I started it up it sounded perfect then it just stopped....everytime I tried to start it from there it had a rattling sound it was the belt jumping around....anyway....I'll keep you all posted.

I'm located in Sydney in Australia.

Heath, sorry to hear of your problem with a new car. See if you can back out but seems like you have signed the documents. I drove my 944S 680 miles before a balance shaft belt broke and disloged the timing belt. If misery loves company I am there for you!
