Default oem mirrors... lightening options?

I took the 944 electric mirrors off because they are heavy pigs, but here I am missing them because they work so well. My doors are gutted but I'm thinking of putting the factory mirrors back on. Any way to reduce their weight?

Why not use 924 mirrors, just remove the cable adjuster and you have very light mirrors almost identical to the factory Cup mirrors.

Hmmm, neato! I didn't know that. I will look around and see if I can find some for sale. Many thanks. I wonder if 85/1 US mirrors were motorized or like this also?

All 944 mirrors are the same and they were all motorized as were the later 924 mirrors, look for early 924 mirrors which were manual cable operated. Apparently they are hard to find but I easily found a set when I was looking a couple of years ago. There is a wire cable on them to adjust the mirror from the inside but you can remove it and adjust by sticking your hand outside old school style.

The only place I ever found a set of early 924 manual mirrors was on 924board.org. Not very common over there either. Alternatively, the early Golf and Rabbit mirrors are the same but have different bases. Perhaps there is a way to make them fit to our doors. If so, maybe the price of turbo cup mirrors will come down to more realistic prices.

The 924 mirrors are getting expensive, seen some sell for 500 euros. They are very light, they were used on the base models 924 if you did not order the electrical mirrors..which most did. They were available as the only mirrors for the GTS and later on used for the 944 CUP but without the cable adjusting mechanism...and people say they have some differences..probably the mechanism holes plugged.
Anyway, they are small too...so good aero but not so good as mirrors lol

I was hoping to make the same modification to my 951 with the Turbo Cup Mirrors. Was able to find a single driver side mirror from the UK which set me back $200 (Early cable 924 mirror). Unfortunately the cable can be removed but due to the way the internals are arranged, the cables are what essentially keeps the mirror hardware in place. Removing them would cause the mirror to fall out. I think I can work around this but would hate to modify the mirror too much.

The other problem is that I only have the driver side Who needs a passenger mirror anyways - weren't they originally just an option

MK2 golf mirrors with an angled shim adapter should do the trick.
