Question 951 Brakes onto a 87' 944s

I have a set of 951 front brakes I want to install on my 87' 944s. Anyone with any knowledge on this install please post. Do I need some type of adapter? Any help would be appreciated.

Well glad to see my little brother taking an active role in his new car.....

This is my kid brother that is fixing and learning how to fix his new 87 944S.

He is also selling a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/ 140K to fund this project. So if any of you guys want a good SUV for about 4K let him know....

Thanks Craig

Question

Do your new callipers have the mounting bolts on "ears" so that the bolts go at 90 deg to the disc, i.e. early 951 brakes, or do the mounting bolts go through the body of the calliper parallel to the disc , i.e. late 951 brakes?

I the case of the former, the callipers should mount on the orginal holes, but you may need to juggle discs from different models to get the right offset on the disc.

In the case of the latter, you will need a mounting conversion block -available from Lindsey Racing among others- and then perhaps start looking for the correct disc alignment.

Out of the list of modifications to a 944S, I do not think its in the calipers. The braking system (same as the 8v) are very well equiped to handle anything this car is going to throw at it. I would look into some better (than OE) brake pads, a fluid change if the car is new to you, check the lines and if neccessary replace w/ new rubber ones and call it a day. Also, look at the prices on brake pads/rotors on the stock caliper; I think I get race pads for under 100 bucks and auto-x (aggressive street) pads for around $50 - pretty hard to beat that. If your really want to tinker, add some brake ducts.

Excellence had an article on this about a year ago. Apparently Powerhaus machined a custom set of adapters so that new spindles would not be required. Maby give them a call and see if they offer them to the public.

You need 951 87+ spindles and hubs. If you use ones from an 86, you have to use camber plates because the most you can is -3 degrees. I know because I just made the same mistake on mine. Save the money and spend it on suspension

I remember reading that, does anyone know any more about this? That would solve the problem of switching all the parts which is what turned me off to the procedure.

i know about this. i was planning on doing the same to my car before i decided to sell it.

powerhaus does make the adapter needed, but it was set-up to run the 928s4 big blacks, the same calipers that came on m030 equipped 951's and the later turbo s. the rear 951 calipers will bolt up with just a spacer on each bolt, and using the 951 rear rotors. powerhaus sells the entire kit minus the big blacks. aside from what other people will say here, you do not need the 951 proportioning valve. i actually called powerhaus and talked to the tech that created this package.

if you need more info, i can send you the article.

If the engine isn't running yet, I'd get it fixed first. You might need to sell the brakes to pay for the engine parts.
