Angry Clearcoat repair

It appears that a foriegn substance somehow got onto the outer surface ofthe sunroof and is causing the clearcoat to blister and peel off in an area of about 1 suare foot. Is there a way to remove the clearcoat without damaging the paint underneath and then reapplying it ?

My new 951 has a couple of spots on the hood where the clear is peeling. My body guy told me to just re-shoot the hood. Mine has been peeled for a while, and the underlying paint may have also been damaged, so it might be different than yours. I was hoping they could just sand the edges smooth-and shoot more clear on it. He said it would look like a patch job.

Just my experience.

I had that happen with my 83...I asked the same questions, there is nothing you can get to remove the clearcoat without damaging the paint....the new owner repainted the entire car, if i were you I would just bite the bullet and shell it out for a new paint job on the roof...

A paint guy once told me: you can't respray clearcoat. If the clearcoat is coming off, it's not adhering to the base layer. If you reshoot over the same base layer, the same peeling will occur.

All the above is true. You did not go into detail about the substance that cause the problem, but if it ate away the clear then it has also damage the base, even if not so apparent. The good news is if it is contained to just the sunroof that should be an easy fix for an experienced painter. If you where closer to ATL , I would be happy to help.

P.S. for what it's worth I have over 12 years as a certified painter
