junkyard score
Ever go to the store for one little thing and end up taking home a whole crap load of crap that you didn't need but got anyway while you were there? Well that happened today at the junkyard.
Went to get a window regulator for my friends Camry and saw this 88 auto they got in a few weeks ago. It had a few nice little goodies on it that I couldn't walk away from. A perfect set of gauges, a wiper/signal switch, perfect uncracked set of dash trim, an HVAC in perfect shape, a rear wiper delete plug, a pair of decent fog lights, and the scores: a 931 header panel with perfect vents in it and a pair of front Koni coil-overs. All to the tune of $126. I couldn't say no to that!!
While I was there a guy came up to me that, through talking, I found out now owns the first 944 that I ever owned. The one I traded for a Lexus SC400 (I still regret that decision). It later got ran over by a Hummer while parked on the street and I always assumed it got junked but the owner apparently fixed it and sold it. Tis a small world out there.
What scores have you guys found at the junkyard?

Well.....
4 years ago, my brother and I were scouting deer and looking at some Packard parts to buy from a guy with his place filled with cars.
Walking thru the 4 foot high weeds and cat-tails, I stumbled on a 1962 - 356 Cabriolet. It was rough and later a negotiated sale was made for 1,000.00, then went thru a 4 year restoration.
Today it's a 1/4 million dollar, show winning beauty, with it's original Heron Gray repaint. Black top, red leather interior.
( oh, it was also a S90, or a Super with 90 h.p. when built by Porsche.
It was one of the best finds I ever came across, but condition wise, one of the worst

Less than a year ago I bagged an LSD trans $300, 16” 951 Fuchs wheels $350 and a set of late sports seats that needed recovering $200. I also got a non-delaminated hatch for $150 which is now a spare for one of my cars when it needs it. Stuffs out there, Lart doesn’t have it all!

LOL
I've scored a few times. Late sport seats needing recovering for $50 each, nice black carpet set for like $100, and one time my friend needed a throttle body for his 400E, I went to the junkyard and the first one I grabbed was a brand new part from MB. Sometimes you get lucky!
One time I found a 944 with no AC and manual steering, so I suspected it was a gray market car. The manual steering was gone, but I scored the AC delete bracket! I then remove the head to see if it had the 10.6:1 pistons, and it did! It was getting late, and just as I got the engine supported and pan removed, an employee came around kicking people out. I rushed to get the pistons out quickly, and I cracked the last one.

Wasn't a junkyard score, but I did find a guy desperate to unload his 944S for any offer. Car had accident damage in front, no engine or trans, and it was a 3 hour drive but he accepted my $100. I got:
Nice set of turbo phone dials, Koni front struts, 1 good sport seat, good hatch (which I put on my 924S), script door handles, gauge cluster, steering wheel and some odds and ends.
Scrapped the shell for $300, so I'd say I made out pretty well.

Oh....and I had a Junkyard near me that used to have a whole row of Porsches 914, 944, 911, 968... all models. I scored some pretty sweet parts over the years.
Factory sport seats, factory 924 mud guards, 968 Wheels, Momo steering wheel, etc....two items slipped out of my hands because of lack of tools or time. 1st was a 924 Turbo header panel....2nd was a Weltmeister Adjustable rear sway bar. In both situations I came back and they had crushed the car because of new inventory coming in.
I also purchased lots of E30 parts from that yard.
Cheers

Visited a bone yard in Brockton, MA last year and found an 88 924S that was basically trashed. However, I picked through the hard to find clamps, brackets, both window regulator/motor assemblies, those small plastic screw caps covering many interior securing hardware, a complete set of the rear deck carpeting push caps (in great shape), clock, the hard to find in good shape ventilation switch, both door pockets (carpeted) and sun visors (looked new once cleaned up) and other assorted small bits. The guy behind the counter looked disparagingly at the pile and mumbled "I guess $20 bucks should do it; you've got a problem with that?"
Me mumbling back: " I guess so..."
It was a good day!

I bought an ‘84 parts car for $450. Before I even picked it up I had the Fuchs sold for more than the price of the car.
Another time I discovered a nice early 944 in a nearby junkyard with seats in great shape (they had probably been recovered.) Unfortunately, they were in great shape when they areived at the junkyard but not when I found them. Otherwise I could have had them for $30 each. I did get plenty of bits and pieces from it, though.

Junkyards are harsh environments, even though the cars are in there for a short time. I was looking for a fender once, and a car showed up with a nice fender, except that the guy that got to the car before me used the fender as a work table for taking apart a cylinder head.
