Default 944 Axles Assemblies

Can anyone give suggestions of the best deal on complete axle assemblies? I check the CV's on my 83 last night, they are bad. Hoped I could replace the whole axles for less than the cost of CV's only.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

I've seen remans for a hundred. You just have to look.

Steve, I think that used CV's are going to be a hit or miss proposition at best. These things take a lot of abuse, and even used ones on eBay are going to be questionable - why buy something that may last only a few thousand miles before you have to take it all apart again - or get stranded somewhere when one goes and you face a large towing bill or worse. It's probably best to buy the CV joints from Paragon and rebuild them yourself. Then you'll know what the benchmark mileage is for sure.

Sorry (for not clearly stating my objective - thanks for the idea though) - I prefer new axle assemblies, not used or re-man. I will check the list sponsors first. Would like to be able to get both new axle assemblies for a few hundred bucks.
Maybe a few and a half.
Too much into the 944 at this point for used stuff. I check on local CV joints and they wanted $98.00 each. Shopped a little and found some for $65.00 - $130.00 per axle. Hoped to get complete assemblies for $150.00 give or take . .
Thanks!
Steve

Here is a picture of the damage - not really bad at all. Sounded like a bearing going out. One "journal" on this CV and two on the other. This is from the driver side, so it was near the exhaust pipe. I plan to wrap the section near the axles shaft.

Make sure that you tell the supplier that you have an early 944. The later manual trans axles are a tad longer because of the aluminum a-arms.

At $60 a side I would have questions as to what remanufactured means.

Paragon carries complete axle assemblies at a decent price. No affiliation, just a happy customer

Cheers,
Sach

Paragon's price is a ripoff compared to 944racing - really strange, I noticed it when I was comparing prices a few weeks ago.

I went ahead and re-assemble these, swapping sides to move the wear points. Did install new washer/clips and boots. Man, that lube is nasty stuff.
Car drove OK, still have sound, dronning sound at speed, so it is either the other side or the wheel bearings. Never done rear wheel bearings before, should be interesting . . . .
The tire spun freely and the bearings seemed OK. Maybe I should just clean/repack the other side anyway and see how it looks . . .

With the axles off you spin the hub (preferably with the wheel on) while placing one hand on the backing plate. You can feel bad bearings.

Early 944 rear bearings are a cinch compared to later 944's. Have to torque the nut to 350 ft lbs though. Inside bearing is ball, out side is roller. You have to pull the seal on the inside and take out a large snap ring. The ball bearing can be tapped out the back -- a little on one side then the other. Replace both seals and the o-ring.

Steve-

What local vendor is giving lifetime warranty for $59.99? Does he know how fast our cars go thru CV's??
