Yes there are the 911's, 917's, all great...

But what about the Auto Union Silver Arrows...Prewar, mid engine, completely dominated racing until WWII. It was 30 years ahead of its time and the automobile had only been around for 30 years.

Oh, and it was designed by Ferdi I.
