This is the way I locked mine when I used the engine oil cooler http://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/zTN_E...Flaps-warm.jpg

Now I have an external oil cooler and have removed the factory one. I made a block that goes on instead of the engine cooler and made a sheetmetal peice to block the old oil cooler space.

I put an external cooler, on the blue '73, above the trans under the rear trunk floor, but I used one of those adapter plates that fit between the oil filter and engine. Worked really well.

Well, while the heads are away, I made a little progress because morning weather has been tolerable (all other work has been shifted to after 11:00 am because of the heat). Made a tool to extract the fan hub (the three bolts push against the flat steel ring, made from an old synchro ring retainer, until the hub pops off). The seal area has a couple of old knicks that need to be cleaned up a bit. Funny, I couldn't find any reference, in my manuals, for the o-ring in picture #2, but I found it in the PET so I know it belongs.

Took the oil cooler off to replace its seals, and clean it. The seals were perfect, go figure, but I sure didn't want to take the engine out two months from now when they started to leak. Cooler cleaned up nicely.

Freshened up the tin part of the heat exchangers and dressed them up with some 500 degree heat paint by Rustoleum. Did a little cleaning on the crankcase - everything was very dirty, but it's coming along. Got the tin back from the powder coat company, so that's done. Crank seal at the fan hub next, and then the heads!

I've always found the oil cooler seals to look ok even though they leaked. I think they just loose some of their squishiness and start to weep.

Watch the bolts on the fan. I'm pretty sure they are an odd length and if they are too long they will hit the fan housing and self clearance.

Got it! The hardware is actually in beautiful condition, it'll go back where it came from.

Baby steps. Got the heads back, unfortunately our weather forecast, for the next 9 days, predicts between 100F and 110F, which means it will be hot as hell in my garage! Hey, got the new o-ring and seal for the fan hub installed...

I LOVE puttting an engine back together when everything is so clean and new looking, and it is easier to keep it clean as well. Love keeping the engine compartment as clean as the exterior... I know it's a sickness...

Going to be 110F here today; not a good time to be in the garage!

Where are you doing the 2.0, AZ or Iowa? We're expecting temps in the high 90s, maybe low 100s, by the end of this week, so my project will probably go back on hold...

Pete- I'm assemblying it in Iowa, will do at least 500 miles in shake down mode in Iowa since that's where my tools etc are, then I'll get to Arizona where I'll probably never put the top on! My boys say they'll drive it to AZ but I'll probably ship it...
(would be a fun drive though- I drove a 356 Cab from Newport Beach back to Iowa in the mid 80's with my dad and had a great time!!)

Iowa explains the weather cooling off! I'm pretty sure that it's still hot in AZ, my wife saw 109F on her car yesterday evening coming home from work! It was 105 in our garage yesterday afternoon, so my project will have to wait a while.
