Default Well, Crap...Glad I Didn't Sell It!

This would have been seriously embarrassing!

Took my little car ('74 1.8) for a drive. Got to the end of the street, stopped for the stop sign, accelerated through the intersection, got to about 3K revs, and... A loud noise started in the engine compartment, which at first I thought was a broken alternator belt flying around, or maybe a few blades in the cooling fan broke.

I had instantly removed my foot from the gas pedal, and while thinking about problems, noticed that the car was no longer idling smooth. It was lumpy and slow, and then the car stalled. Uh, oh. I cranked the engine, and it started, but ran very rough. I did a quick u-turn, got the car up to about 20 mph, and shut it off, managing to coast (yes, I ran the stop sign!) all the way to my driveway, where I was able to push the car into the garage.

The noise? Heck if I know, I've never heard a noise like this one. Broken valve spring? Loose valve seat? Broken rings? Oh, the engine will not start in order to attempt a garage diagnosis. More when the engine's out!

Peter perfect time for a 911 engine. I know this is going to start a big debate. Jim

make a really nice 2.0 (1883cc) Type IV with nickkies etc. That's because spent some time at vintage races with friends this weekend. Sort of insane how that little engine has got goodies for it. Couple of guys in our shed had those. Sort of fast. Did a 2.7- 6 914 back in 80's. Lot of work, then again you do have experience in that area Pete.

Yep, I built a 2.6 w/Solex cams for my real, '70 914/6 many years ago. Man, that car was fun!

I've already got some calls out about engines/engine parts, but the most costly problem is the front engine mount, and all of the oil system parts (reservoir, lines, etc.). If any of you guys have a good 2.0/2.2 liter 911 engine lying around...

And then, of course, there are those pesky heat exchangers and muffler.

eh....just had lunch with my buddy Danny. He campaigns a 914 6 and has a lot of that stuff I think. Think traded off a 2.0 6 not too long ago. I'll txt him and see what he has laying around. Also helps some other vintage club races so might have some resources. I'll see what he's got on hand. On it. Probably just e-mail you later if find anything.

Peter - you are right, -- the oil tank, lines, cooler, engine tin, etc . . . . . but it sure does make for an exciting ride. Me personally I would build off a 3.0 or 3.2 aluminum case so you do not incur the cost to make a mag case usable. jim

Romanowski can build a MEAN 4 banger. 180 hp, and 150 MPH on back straight at the Glen.

150 MPH at watkins glen with a four banger? If so I would be interested. I do 142 with a regeared LSD 901 and 200 HP 6 cylinder and it is scary as hell.

By the way, are you two coming to the clash? We should be there all weekend if nothing breaks..........................

RE: 914/6 engine mount. if you go that way, i have a really good one that I sell for a guy that makes them. Got them in both 914's.

And I second the 3.2 swap. I absolutely LOVE driving Huey. Drove him the other day to work and smiled the whole way. Will be doing much more of that after this weekend.

BTW, any of you northern guys going to the Glen for the Clash?
