Man, I just looked at the first post of this thread - the little car has been out of service way to long!

Today I managed to connect & torque the CV joints/bolts, and install the heat exchangers. I also managed to connect the loose gas lines in the engine compartment before my shoulder screamed, "No more!"

Almost there...

Why do I feel the urge to search craiglist for a 914 every time I see this thread?

You're making me jealous- guess I'll have to look under the silver car to remember what that looks like. Will be a while with the red one...

NC and I are having a "race" to see who's last putting their cars back together...

IT RUNS!!! Three cranks, start, and idle smoothly at 800 rpm. Revs clean, no funny noises, no billowing smoke. Haven't driven the car yet, but it sure sounds sweet. Except for the crappy after market muffler that didn't fit worth a damn and took two hours to put on! Double checks today, drive tomorrow.

Especially because it's been about 25 years since I did 914 engine work! And so much can go wrong with a project like this (used parts, exchange heads, partial clutch, ancient heat exchangers, new wire harness for alt/reg/starter, lot's of oil seal replacement, measure and mark the fan for OT & 7 degrees advance, etc.), I actually took my wife out to the garage and handed her our biggest fire extinguisher before I turned the key! What a relief, even the rebuilt alternator works!

Ask, and you shall... that said, our SC looks better in person than in pictures; the 914 not so much!

You'll win. He's now thinking of getting a 944 race car... :-)

Drove it. A little balky cold, very smooth after a few minutes. Went to a neighborhood gas station and added some fresh gas. Going to have to check CO%, got a fast idle, about 1600 rpm, that the throttle body screw won't compensate for. Other than that, not to shabby for an almost 40-year old car.
