Got the halfshafts on (thanks to some help from PMB and Eric Shea), and hooking up some electrics, and have the carbs on. Going to try the Mallory distributor from Chris Foley and Tangerine.... but have another little diversion which is in picture below. Will be working on the 914 in between races...

My son got his formula race car which we'll be taking around the midwest this summer to various SCCA races. His "pit crew" will get to try it out as well and I can't wait!!

Hopefully it will be warmer when we race than the day we picked it up!!

It is slowly coming back to life- put a battery in it and tried a few things... and we have some major electrical issues, but luckily no electrical fires... yet.

Turned on headlights and they sure point interesting directions, and don't light up in spite of our new relay wiring which obviously is wrong somewhere.

Rear "signals" light up the backup lights... parking brake light on dash flashes all the time!! Oh well, being colourblind doesn't help with wiring, even with the factory wiring diagrams and reading glasses!!!

It at least sounds like you have something to work with. Now it's just the tedious trouble shooting.

I HATE electrical issues. Noticed today NONE of the gauge lights work, but the gauges themselves do move when they get power.
When rewiring my fog lights on the silver car something like 40 years ago so I could flash them (what we used to do when we saw another Porsche on the road! ) I started a fire under the dash... that was NOT fun.
I also put in the new fuse panel from JW West so that probably has something to do with it as well.

Sh*t- not looking forward to this...

Well.... I got it running this afternoon after hooking all the electrical lines, fuel lines, etc. Cleaned carbs and accelerator pumps now all squirting!! More crud in the carbs than I figured!!

Makes great oil pressure and no major leaks! Need to set timing and adjust carbs, but it actually ran under its own power for about 100 yards!! Have to do some MAJOR bleeding to the brakes!! Yikes!! Glad I was barely moving!!

Also have to figure out why headlights don't work even though they're getting 12V to high and lo beams...

Engine running with great oil pressure and no leaks!! Gotta get timing down, and then major carb tuning, but my son and I drove it about 2-3 miles and got it in all the gears. Need some adjustment of the Rennshift but otherwise tranny feels great. Suspension is tight and feels fantastic. Bled brakes twice but still feel REAL spongy. Will need to heat up and bleed some more!!
Rewired headlights with relay kit for the new H4's, but have to figure out where the problem is as neither lo or hi beams work yet- foglights are fine...

Picture is next project- gonna restore my first vehicle, a Simplex Challenger go-kart I got in 1961. A friend found a rebuilt West Bend 580 engine just like the one it had when new and I found "new" original decals for it after a new paint job. I know, it's a disease...
