Just got a '74 914

Usually California spec'd cars suffered from more SMOG issues, but I thought that didn't start till '75 or '76 at the latest. Air pumps, Catalysts etc. I don't recall all the details, but perhaps for '74 all it meant was some lower compression pistons?

So I found my motor serial number: EC017488
According to the two sites linked by Matt and Mike in the oil thread, I have a '74 1.8 L-Jetronic fuel injected (it now has carbs) that was California only. Is this correct? I found an insurance card in the glove box that dates to 1981 in Colorado. I guess it could have been a California car originally. What's the difference between California cars and rest of US cars?

Got some more goodies today. My friend that I traded with gave me a pile of gaskets he ordered when he first got the 914. Looks like enough to reseal the whole motor. I'll get pics.
Also, I developed a popping noise that sounds like it is a backfire but not as loud and seems like it is coming from the engine compartment. Happens only when idling or when not accelerating. I've been driving it to work this past week since my Golf was down for some minor repairs. No issues until the last day when the popping noise started. A friend works at a local air cooled VW shop that has a mechanic that knows these motors well. They'll help me get it all tuned up, just need to find the time/money to take it there.
I really enjoy driving it. People are always asking me what it is. Even had a guy on a sport bike try to race me. If only he knew his bike probably had twice the horsepower...

Love these morons who want to race- tonight driving home from the store (in the GT3) some idiot in a yellow Charger just had to race me down the on-ramp... they do it in the 914 too... as you said, if they only knew how much HP we have in those!!

Took the 914 for a spin today. Not too hot and a light breeze. I just love driving this car! Had a couple on a motorcycle compliment me on the car. Now i gotta get it tuned up so I can drive it to work on days like today.

Thad,
Congrats on the car! It looks pretty nice. Be sure to PM me and I'll give you details about the local (Denver) area 914 group. A good group of folks and always willing to help out.

Have a Porsche parking area for the Indycar race at Iowa Speedway this Saturday. May just take the 914- pretty sure it will be the only one there. Sure hope it doesn't rain, for many reasons!! I love watching road races in the rain, but of course they won't be running an oval in the wet stuff... there will be enough contact I'm sure without any other help!!

One day...
My car probably looked like this new. Although the Delphi Green Metallic seems a little dark.
This would be fun. The Ravenna Green seems more like the Delphi.
I came across this on 914 World. A lot of fun.

A little late to the thread here....nice car Thad! Sounds like you're really enjoying it.
You'll find a lot of what you're looking for and some great advice on 914world and 914club websites. This forum is trolled mostly by Jay, Matt and Peter, and I wouldn't necessarily trust their opinions anyway...
Oh, and there's Brad too...again...just sayin...
Seriously, enjoy that great little car. But if you really want to make yourself sick in a few years, make a notation somewhere in your records of what your bank account balance is right now. Then look at it again in, say, 5 years. No, it's not expensive to maintain these cars at all..actually pretty cheap for what you get. It's the 'I gotta UPGRADE this and that' syndrome we all get!!
Here are two pictures of our cars in their early years:

Trolled?
But seriously, those are some amazing before and after pictures! Now back to trolling!
Also Bob, I saw Huey in that parade of Porsches in Pano! You are almost as famous as Matt and I.
