Can you engage the clutch in 1st and roll away from a stop with no accelerator pedal?

Correct me if I'm wrong...backfiring is most often related to a lean condition. Ergo, your [28-yo OE?] fuel pumps could be coming to the end of their useful lives. Each has a factory flow rate specification, which others here probably know off the top of their head, that can be tested/measured.

Something else to consider. You mentioned a new CDI and coil...how old are your plugs and wires? I've observed off the line hesitation/bucking in other cars from nothing other than worn plugs.

Thanks for all the replies and help. I finally have it fixed. Was able to finally locate a new long green wire(from 928RUS). I replaced the entire distributor wire back to the CDI and now she runs perfectly. Again, appreciate all the help and advice. Awesome forum.

The end of an epic long story. Good job narrowing it down and fixing it. You had some weird mo-jo going on and attacked each in a logical fashion. Happy for you, now go out and rod the **** out'a her!

Thanks guys. Cost me more than anticipated to resolve the issue but that is life with a 930. Worth every penny!
