Post SC cams or 964 cams?

I'm finally getting a somewhat overdue top end rebuild. I'm planning on changing to either SC or 964 cams. Any information or suggestions from people who have been down this road would be appreciated. My other mods include GHL headers/muffler, K27-7200, Kokeln intercooler and some suspension modifications. The car is used mostly for street driving and 2-4 DE events/year. Which cams should I get and why? Thanks.

964's, higher lift. Nice duration, more top end power when used with larger K27 hyflow, K27-7006, T66 Garretts and so on...

Hi Brian:

I'll "second" Kevin's suggestion, based on the other things you've done. When its time to remove the heads, I'd strongly suggest having your heads and intake manifold opened up and flowed for greater airflow. Thats the REAL key to more power without requiring more boost.

I will also recommend changing gear ratios, not the R&P. This will fix the real problem these cars have that saps acceleration; excessive RPM drops at each shift.

The difference is staggering.

Steve,

Didn't you hear that the 4sp wide ratios were much better for the "broad torque range" of the 930s? Geez, where've you been?

I would call Elgin and Webcam to describe your goals. You would be surprised how inexpensive a set of custom billet cams can be.
You came to the right site....lots of "personal" opinions here.

Brian,

I previously had 964 cams in my engine and liked them very much. When I rebuilt the engine, I could not find a good set of 964 cams. All of them had pitting on the lobes of the left cam. I ended up going aftermarket with a pair of Integral cams modified 964 grind. They have 5 degrees more duration and .005" of lift on both intake and exhaust. I really like the combination.

Yeah - well my SC cams are better than your 964 cams, and my 4 speed is better than your 5 speed (oh, and my dad could beat up your dad - not really, I don't think my dad could beat up my mom).

Really, though, when I went through this my goals were similar to yours Brian. I wanted great street performance with a few DEs thrown in per year. Everyone, including Steve W, seemed to steer me to the SC cams as they really help off boost and low end performance. My car certainly has the low end - which may be why the 4 speed does not bother me in terms of power band issues. The 964 cams, I was told, are more geared to improving the top end, which was not as important to me.
