I've seen that same style California VIN tag on another '79 930. Does the California DMV molest the VIN tags on 49-state models coming into California?

It is my understanding that when a stolen car in California is recovered and the factory issued Vin # has been compromised (damaged or removed ), the State of California issues its own Vin# and Vin plate which supercedes the OE vin#.

Maybe one of our California RL posters with knowledge on this subject can comment.

When studying the photo above, it appears as if some of the last four numbers have been altered ............ on top of this, it looks like the Cal Sate issued vin tag has also been screwed with.

The mileage on these cars is a moot point for the most part... Now with that said, the truth is ANY aircool 911 of any year can have it's VDO gauge removed and/or DISCONNECTED. Don't fool yourself that into thinking that just because a seller has all the records that everything is kosher. It's pretty much a toss up. Yes in a perfect world all mileage would be true..not even a seller might actually know the truth. The condition of the car should be the deciding factor. I'm sure if a 1973 RS popped up ebay claiming to be low mileage(or even high for that matter)..for a fair price of less than $150k...many would be all over that S**T with no regards to whether the mileage is true or not..Price and condition should be priority..mileage should be secondary..at least that is my opinion

^^what he said. There is a infamous dealer around these parts known to modify the VDO speedos, be careful. The most important factor is condition, always trumps milage, it will require a good PPI. I looked at 4 930s before deciding on my '86. The first car had 42k and some unique options, appeared to be a local one owner....not! Ppi revealed severe under car damage, non factory seats ( car had sport seats a few months prior), no seat belts, ran like crap. Something bad happened to this car google and the ppi saved me.
Another car looked fantastic, perfect exterior and interior 60k ish milage, and a big price tag to match. Unfortunately the ppi revealed poor maintenance and severe oil leaks, car looked like crap up on the lift. The last car had 99k miles, ppi showed everything ran perfectly, dry as a bone, many new components. New brake lines, new
oil lines, new drop links etc ....a very well cared for 930. So you can't go by milage its about condition on these old cars.

I echo Doug and Rey's comments, condition condition condition.
You guys know, I've looked at dozens of cars all price points. One slant, the owner admitted the speedo hasn't worked in years. Be careful, due diligence.

Doug. Rey, Chris, Great Points! Baron, thanks for starting this. The discussion on low and lower mileage speedometer awareness was long overdue. 30-35,000 mile 930’s with total repaints and clapped out (or repaired) interiors were far more abundant than I could have ever imagined when I was on the hunt.

Condition IS Everything. This tread is a good start to becoming educated.

If it helps my 79 SC US spec car vin number 575 had the 150mph speedo. My grey market 79 retained the KPH speedo and had DOT approval.

hmmmm- just bought a 79 with a 180 speedo showing 49458 miles which were believed to be original...and then I realized odometer is not working either.

Granted car runs perfect and is not a beauty pageant winner.....I am disappointed to say the least.

Car has been sitting aroun for many years though and last documentation I have that was provided by original owner was a Porsche service in 2002 with 48K miles on the clock...LAst year the car was mechanically overhauled...but no idea now on mileage/

Mileage in only an indicator of condition and with air cooled 911s one must always be suspect without lots of documentation.

The speedo/odometers are just so easy to alter or disconnect. Hell, you just buy a second unit and change it every now and then. I knew someone who kept his mileage down by changing his speedo with a second one at every oil change. It was sold with two speedos and the buyer was told to add 'em up if wanted the 'true' mileage.

I had a friend about twenty years ago that pushed in the trip button and the odometer broke. Speedo worked for about a year. The car still has 32000 miles on the clock twenty years later on his weekender, just saying

Doesn't matter if the odo is broken or not as a 180mph speedo was never original for a 3.3 liter U.S. 930 (in the U.S., 180mph speedo was only used in the 1976 U.S. 3-liter Turbo Carreras)
