Post Average cost to 'build' 930 motor to make more driveable

All the typicals things done to make a 930 a more driveable car... ie TORQUE, I come from a mustang background.

At some point i have to weigh new car (M3, 930, 911, C5) vs continueing to mod the mustang (around 4k for s/c=420+/- rwhp).

Thanks in advance.

Hi Clarke - if you are looking for cheap or even reasonably priced HP you are in the wrong place. 4K gets you maybe a K27 and intercooler upgrade and perhaps 330 flywheel HP in a 3000 pound car. The people who are making close to the max 450-480 flywheel HP that the 930 CIS fuel system will support are all in well over 10K - and probably a lot more than that (unless they are running unsafe boost). When you see people quoting over 500HP they are well over 20K or have done all the work themselves. Stick with the Mustang if HP and Torque are your goals.

Thanks for the response. coming from a modular ford powered car. that is not unheard of... I can bolt a blower on the old stang for 4k, but i also might lose a motor like my dad did. Modular stangs cost around 8k-20k to build to take some serious boost. Sounds like Porsche are not that much different in that sense. Well eventually i will drive one to determine if that is a good route to go... Parkplace near me usually has at least 2, but not known for the composure to the 'maybe' customer.

hasn't anybody done their own fab work? Buy a turbo form turbo netics? Buy end tanks and a core from Spearco? Probably build a much better and less $$$ setup and have more satisfaction from doing the job themself <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Keep in mind that even the 390 hp supercharged Cobra is just barely faster than a dead stock 930. Even moderate bolt-ons will make a 930 faster than you could reasonably expect to build a modular to be, unless you started with a Cobra. If you want a dragracer, a 930 is the wrong way to go, as is the modular v8 (think 5.0 small block).

Then there is $2000 for a good exhaust, $3000 for headwork, $3600 for P&C, the list goes on and on.

Man, where are all these driveability issues coming from for the 930? This car is easy to drive stock, and when you get on the boost it is an absolute blast. There are no driveability issues with it, it is just that most owners become obsessed with more power. I am sure if you were to drive one, you would be amazed by the push in the back you get under boost. It is the difference between power under boost and power without boost that people get to talking about driveability issues.

930chas,
I couldent agree with you more. I actually prefer to drive my 930 around town. While its low end is poor by sports car standards. It still has enough zip to cruise around town even with the engine turning 2k or so. If you want more power all you have to do is let her rev a bit. I find it funny that people speak poorly of 930 drivability. If you read original reviews of 930s they are praised for their supreme drivability and practicallity in the supercar class. I guess the concept of drivability has changed in the last decade or so.

Aschen - I think you hit the nail on the head. The concept of drivability in a car of this level has change quite a bit in the last 10-15 years. When you can go out and buy a Subaru WRX Turbo brand new that will be even with a 930 0-60, and compete at the track, and that also has a solid low-end, all for less than a 15 year old 930, people will begin to expect more. If you have ever driven a 993/996TT you will see how much more usable (aka easy to drive) these newer cars are.

Clark,

My recommendations for driveability (read response) are, in order of priority:

1. Raise boost pressure to 1.0bar max
2. Fit small tube headers (B&B, GHL, 9m or whatever, all work well)
3. K27/11 turbo
4. Free flow silencer/cat
5. Intercooler upgrade

With our Euro 930s the boost & headers make 360bhp & 515Nm (stock 300/420) and pull the torque in 700rpm earlier. The car drives more like an atmo 3.2 Carrera and is far nicer around town, economy and emissions are not affected (thanks to K-Jet).

Anyway, what's a small block?
