I presume my G50/01 has been shortened at the bellhousing. This is possible by replacing the rubber centred clutch with a spring centred clutch.
More to it than just shorting the bellhousing and replacing the rubber centred clutch with a spring centred clutch. The tranny has to be disassembled thnd the mainshft has to be machine/shortened as well. Then of course there is the swap of the pedal box, addition of the hydraulic lines and proper resevior..oh yeah, and the modified trans mount.

Of course if you're really bold, you can always hack out your torison tube, brace and modify the area for a custom mount and run coil overs. Or you can swap in a later torison tube. So there are options..but not for the faint of heart. Then of course there is the issue of "does this mod add to.. or detract from the value of the car.

Whatever you prefer is cool.. it's all just sheet metal right?

Which is why it is just better to start with an 89 or later turbo.

You are correct if one is just purchasing, however.. some of us have owned our 930s.. and others for many years. I've owend a 77, 78, and 89.

78 and 89 were owned simultaneously for awhile. However, I decide to sell the 89 becuase it was a very nice car, the 5spd didn't mean that much to me, and I knew if I sold the 78 I would end up spending the money on mods for the 89... which the 78 already had. 89 was very clean bone stock car.

Put a G50 in my highly modified "78 930. Glad I did it. Wouldn't do it again.

Thanks for everyones input; everyone's comment is valid; like my 70 Chevelle, only 4 speed trannys were available that year. Crude, high reving, loud, rough, but oh so fun to drive. Even I changed the gearing all the way from 4:10 to 3:35, its still crude, high revving, loud, rough, but still OH so fun to drive. I sense all of you 930 owners (pre-89) feel the same passion with a good ol' 4 speed.

Of course having more "modern" 5 speed tranny would make driving a 454 big block engine more easy, I can stick one in, but at what cost and do you "really" need to make that drastic of an improvement? I think older P-owners have the same options as well and are faced with the same decisions. With that said, when I looked for my 70 Chevelle, I wanted one as year-correct as possilbe; just for the "experience of the year."

Yes, I agree, "whatever floats your boat is correct", whatever your wallet can stand. There is something to be said to keeping a car "year correct" to experience what the factory was capable during that time period.

My 4-speed busted, so it was put in a new one, re-geared, or drop in a 5-speed. My calculation of the delta between those two options was way off, unfortunately.

Still, it's done and paid for, so now I'm on the good side of it. It really is good for staying on boost on the track, and for the street, the hydraulic feel is better. Especially combined with a Wevo G50 shifter, it's a far different experience--more modern, without losing the overall rawhide feel of the car.

But it was way too much bleepin' money.

So I have heard!! The G50 does make the car modern to drive for sure, great feel, well spaced and well matched to the car. Porsche engineers should be ashamed to not have built the G50 earlier in the cars production history, for crying out loud they waited almost 15years!

How can I see if the tranny is shortened?
I have a G50 in my `87 930, it was in there
when I bought it.
Like to know how they did the conversion.
Clutch is hydraulik, they did a nice job there.

Only I see that the "sword" (rear engine mount)
is a little bended. Means the engine looks about
5-10mm more backwards as normal.

I had the pleasure of seeing a G50 sitting on the floor from a late 3.2 carrera recently in someones garage. I noticed how much longer the bellhousing is than my 915 from my early carrera. When I looked at my 930 yesterday it looked very similair to my 915.

Take a few good photo's, I should be able to tell.

I love my 4spd. A nice change from my 5spd 951. The 4spd trannies are built like tanks. Isnt it pretty much the exact same tranny run in the 700hp 935s?

the 89 5spds are great, but the price jump is not modest. A lot of people see that and go straight into a 964t for the same money. Its a tough choice.
