Default turbo oil tank overfull/ turbo bad?

hello,
friend of mine has a problem with his turbo.
He installed a nearly new K27 7200.
before there was same turbo, only more miles on the car.

Driving few rounds with the new one, the car made
big oil clowds out of the exhaust.
Checking the turbos oil tank, it was filled overfull.

Reinstalling older K27 on the car with ZERO other
changes, the symptom was away.

Is this symptomatic for a blown turbo?
This overfull oil drip tank?

Hey there,

I'm not an expert but it sounds like a bad seal. Just replaced my turbo due to a bad seal. Smoked like an old choo choo train.

Good luck...and Happy Holidays.

Before renovating the turbo I would test the turbo oil pump since it doesn't seems to be evacuating the drop tank. There is a post somewhere describing how to do this.

Everything is working fine with the other turbo,
I dont think that the oil pump works with one
and not with another turbo.

one misconception w/ turbos...they do not have actual seals...they are actually just steel clips.

turbos oil runs through the turbo in a gravity fashion. if there is oil running through the housings...it is usually the result of excessive crank case pressure or some blockage in the drain line. turbos should NEVER be installed w/o first changing the oil feed line.

DO NOT attempt to clean in varsol or other solution as you will likely just dislodge some coked oil that will make its way into the bearing hsg and voila...you will have a turbo in need of another rebuild.

while you may get lucky...trust me...it is a crap shoot!

Well you where the one saying the tank is overfilling, if that is the case, which I doubt, the turbo pump isn't working or the pressure in the crank is to high for the pump to evacuate the oil. The test will show if the oil is being evacuated or not. Your call.
