Replacing CV Boot On Or Off The Car?
While under the 930 tonight I noticed some light grease on the axle and underbody as I looked to see where it was coming from I noticed my passenger side inner boot was torn. Should I try to install a new boot with the axle on the car or should I remove it? Which way do you guys do it? Thanks

Three Wheelin'
It is definitely possible to replace the boot with the other end of the axle still attached, I have done it, but I would recommend removing the whole thing and putting it in a vise, makes the process much easier, especially if you have never done this job before. Make sure you disassemble and inspect the CV joint for pitting or other unusual wear and replace if necessary.

I drove my car up on four 4x6 under each wheel and crawled under and did inner and outer on my back. boots are about $17.00 but the crimping tool, torque wrench, ring clamp puller, and advil are gonna kill your wallet. go for it. it wasn't that hard.

Do it under ther car. If you have a good way to jack the car up safely, it is real easy. Also, you can use the black nylon tie instead of the rust prone ring. It is much easier and will not damage the boot. Inspect the bearings while you have it out and repack the joint with the grease that comes with the new boot. Add a little blue Loctite to the bolts and torque to specs. I did mine and even though it was my first time I had no problems. Just read the list of things to do to remove the axel and you will decide to do it under the car too. Good luck.

The job is very messy! I removed the whole 1/2 shaft and replaced the boots on the bench. I am not sure what parts you are thinking about leaving on the car, But I dont see how it is possible to reassemble the shaft with any parts remaining on the car...

It is much easier to remove the whole halfshaft. Then you can clean and repack the grease on a workbench.
Use a long prybar inserted between the allen heads on the inner CV joint to keep the CV from turning while loosening or tightening the allenbolts.
The handle end of the long prybar can brace against the ground or something else solid under the car if you're doing this on your back while under the car.

I did my first inner boot on the car laying under it...and a week later noticed the outer boot also ripped, that time I removed the whole thing.. MUCH EASIER. It is so messy it'l make a backed up sewer look clean! It's a very simple yet gratifying job (sorry you don't gain any power by doing it).

As others have said you can do it on the car, but to do it correctly I would remove it and clean both, reboot and repack both. It is a very messy job and sucks on the bench, under the car will be no better I assure you.
