The turbo is obviously the ultimate 911, but is the only thing I'm gaining is better brakes and more HP, and better tie rods? I have the G-50 5 speed and 217hp. Not a slouch, but not a turbo either. Is it worth the extra $10,000?

Driving around town / city, a Carrera is fun, but for highway / track days, I would prefer a Turbo. Overall, it's yourself who decide ? Work on the Carrera, it might suprise you ! Enjoy !!

I would keep the car bone stock, so no modifications at all. I have yet to hit the track, but plan to do so in the spring. What would a nice, but high mileage 88 930 cost to acquire?

Yes. Regarding the driving around town, my 930 feels just like any other normally aspirated car, but when you put your foot down, boy, does it change! Additionally, the "wide body" looks are really tough to beat.

Actually I have both which is the correct way to do it dont trade your 911 for a 930. get it in addition to the 911. you are not a true porsche fanatic unless you have more than one LOL.

Yeah, I agree with you, but I'm not quite fortunate enough in my 20's to be able to afford more than 1, but hopefully someday

It's funny that you should bring this question up because it is the exact question I had two years ago. I had a pristine '87 targa with low miles but I had owned exciting cars before and this just didn't make the grade. Pleasant and mild mannered but the under lying excitement was not there. Then I found a guy who had an '87 930 that just had a lot of work done on the engine who wanted to get out from under it because he had a 16 year old son, etc. etc. Anyway, with $5000 and my carrera I traded with him. I've never regretted it for one minute. Its like going out on a date with a girl who is cute and sweet but is sorta dull and going out on a date with a girl who has the same face but you notice that her top two buttons are undone and she is not wearring a bra! Things are going to get exciting fast. Good luck whichever way you go.

You can do anything you want to that Carrera. Promotive or Prototech or Powerhaus will all build you a fire breathing 400-600 hp turbo out of a 3.2 engine.
For the price of buying a 930, and taking a chance on somebody else's car, you can have your car made much much faster than any stock 930.
They can add all the turbo components into your engine, and then some.
You would have one hell of a sleeper car. Only a Corvette Z06 could try to keep up.

Enjoy your carrera; then wait for the right deal. However, I belive someone was selling a nice 78 930 that Imagine Auto worked on. That would be a nice car to go after...

I face the same dilema when looking for my car. I drove an '88 Carrera and an '84 930 almost back to back. It was eay choice which car i was going to choose. Nothing compares to that thump in gut turbo punch. My 930 has an exhaust job and running a little higher boost and I find it fine around town. My wife uses it to drop the kids off at school and she's partial to giving it a good run when we have club cruise days etc.
The 930 also has more welds and extra strengthning of the chassis as well. I read this in an article in GT Purely Porsche., not sure if it' s true though. Never looked under it and compared it to a NA 911.
At the end of the day the 930 was a race car refined ( sort of ) for the street.
