Alot of people spend a fortune getting away from the CIS that the 930 & 964T has. They fit the 3.2 carrera intake manifold & injectors too. Upgrading a 3.2 that has a G50 tranny is a good cost effective option. Wider arches (fenders) can always be added. As for the bigger brakes and suspension rates, most people upgrade their 930's too. I have the big blacks on the front of mine and the fronts put on the rear. People also go to coil overs. Your car is lighter. Ruf started with a narrow shell...
I would build it up slowly as you can afford etc.

Watch out for the bills! 3.2's are simple and cheap, turbos are not.
Personally, although the turbo is more of an occasion, for everyday or on a limited budget I'd stick with a 3.2: cheaper, more reliable, practical and the fun starts at lower speeds.
....but if you have deep pockets, and multiple cars, the turbo is in a different league.

Exactly!

If you do a general search under Protomotive there is at least one thread about a guy with a carrera that has the full bay intercooler and around 500 rear wheel hp. You can buy some of those components in stages, stage one would convert you to a turbo. They need to convert the turbo engines to your specs when modifiying the turbos.

You can add lightweight fiberglass turbo fender flares and bumpers and keep your metal doors, roof, hood, ect. Just doing that would make your car faster, from lighter weight.

Just a thought, anyway.

I went though the same delema. I had or have a 83 911sc. Wanted a turbo so decided to turn my car into one. It is an wild ride but the money I have dumped into the car is crazy. I did full turbo motor and full wide body kit as well as tons of other mods. I will say that if I were to do it again I would have started with a 930. buy the time you get done changing everything you will drop twice what a 930 would have cost you.

I can't believe what I am reading from my friends on this forum. It would be insane for anyone who is not well qualified to do his own work to suggest that he should convert his 3.2 to a turbo. If you can do the labor yourself, fine. But if he has to pay for the work it would be crazy. He can probably sell his Carrera for between $17,000 and $20,000 depending on its condition and then look around for a good updated Turbo. If he had to spend $10,000 on the turbo he would still be way ahead because on re-sale he would get his money back, (Or at least most of it). But on a highly modified 3.2-to-turbo he wouldn't get back any of his investment. I know I would not have even looked at a "Created" turbo because of re-sale. I can see how I would convert a Carrera myself thinking that it could be done in little less costly steps but everytime I have done something like that, I have regretted it. I'm NOT,(Let me make this clear), putting anyone's car down here because some of you have done this and have great cars, but I'll bet most of you did the work yourselves. I'm only trying to say that it is a twisting/costly road ahead of anyone starting out on this path. I think it is a lot like putting a 5 spd. into a 930. Some have done it and I know they love it but almost any mech will tell you to sell your '88 and older and get an '89 or newer. And if you have bought a 930 with a 5 spd., I'll bet you did not pay the cost of installation above the market price of your car. Most people that have had a 5 spd. installed say to figure on $7,000 to $10,000. That is the market premium on an '89 over an older 930. Remember the guy who converted an older 930 to a 993? He must have put $70,000 into his car and the most I saw on ebay that was bid was around $40,000.
Learn from this guy.

Well said Rudy, true facts. I am enjoying having a G50 in my 930 at a previous owners expense.

Rudy, I can definitely see each point of view. To get a really fast car, you simply have to modify it, and I was always modifying my hot rods. But for some reason, I feel the need to keep my Carrera as stock as possible. It seems that quite a few people modify their 930s, but how many people have completely stock 930s? I'm cheap with my money, so any car I buy needs to have good resale, which is why I would keep the 930 stock.

IMO, a 3.3 Turbo has plenty of power for me in stock condition.

Murf,
I agree with the stock part but there are simple upgrades that can easily be undone when you go to sell it. Like a larger IC and a new turbo. Both of these will give you more drivability and can be removed if need be. The big thing when looking for a 930 is to look for one that has DOCUMENTED engine work done. Most of these old cars will need some rework sooner or later and it is expensive, If you find one that the owner has just dumped $10,000 to $12,000 into, and he cannot charge you enough to get his money back, then you can expect to have a long trouble free car versus buying one at a cheaper price but with unknown engine condition. If you want to get an idea on turbo parts prices, just order a Pelican or Performance catalog and thumb through it while on the potty.

About 10 years ago I had a friend who bought an 89 Carrera. He got a good deal on it and proceeded to spend about 10k on engine exhaust upgrades. After he thought he had the ultimate Porsche he came over to give me a ride. He'd been in my old 76 that had a few upgrades at that point in time. I told him naw, you drive mine I'll drive yours. The 930 was my first Porsche and I'd never driven a late model Carrera. We did a 15 mile comparo. Man I was dissapointed with how doggy his car was and it supposedly had 260hp. There is no comparision. Once you drive a modded 930 it will blow your mind. And if you've read much on this site you will know once you strat modding this is no looking back.

I'll offer a different perspective and suggest that you look at the 91/92 turbo. With your Carrera, you now essentially have a similar platform as the 930 as far as chassis and suspension design. The 91/92 chassis is significantly stronger and the suspension a more improved design. In all, I think it is a better car, and I've owned both. Styling aside, the 964 platform is refined in so many ways it feels like a transformed car, but retains much of the 930s characteristics.
