RUF 5-speed gearbox rebuild
Hello all,
I'm looking for any recommendations on a good shop that can rebuild a RUF 5-speed that is in an 86 930. I believe there was a shop in Cinci, Ohio that rebuilds Porsche gearboxes but I do not remember the name nor do I know if they are a reputable place.
Nothing major is broken, still shifts fine. However it sounds like it may have lost a bearing near the nose and there is quote bit of metallic material in the gear oil. If anybody has had one rebuilt before and can give a rough figure of what they spent I would appreciate it. Thanks a bunch.

Sorry for interupting but how do you find the RUF gearbox as compared to a G50? Is it a close ratio or normal with a final over drive that allows top speed similar to the 915. thanks.

Patrick Motor Sports is well-know for transmissions. They're in AZ.

Also, Perfect Power was a Ruf distributor in the 80's. they're closer to you in IL.

However, I bet any good Porsche tranny shop could rebuild it for you as long as they can source the parts they need.

Brian Copans is the shop in Cinc. that you are looking for 513 779-3302. I have also heard that RUF 5spd parts are hard to come by. I might inquire with RUF in Texas as my first stop.

So are the 5 speeds in these cars sought after because of the better ratios, higher top speed, better shifting feel? Will a 5 speed equipped 930 outperform a 4 speed?

Geoffrey,
Those parts ARE hard to come by. A few years ago a friend purchased a car with a Ruf 5 speed and it had a problem with 1st gear. I corresponded with both Weissach (the former Canadain Ruf distributor) and Ruf Germany trying to find parts and was told that they do not support those gearboxes any longer.
I feel that this is a problem when you buy an older car that has had some specialized modifications. Where are you supposed to get parts when the manufacturer says they are NLA?

One of Paul Guard's suppliers will get anything you need done for you, and it will be bulletproof. It might take a while though. I would check it out. I doubt Brian Copans would take the job before the next few months of racing season.

I don't know much about these, but I thought the first 4 gears used the same parts as a standard 930 box but maybe with different gears. I thought only 5th gear, the shift mechanism and the rear cover were different.

Stephen at ImagineAuto rebuilt mine about 2 years ago. He has a source for the parts. He did a fantastic job and it shifts like butter.
Cost about $3000 for parts, and about $1200 in labor, as I recall. He replaced syncro, sliders, bands and a couple of bearings.
