Default Rings in backwards

My engine is apart getting new rings, too much boost cracked rings in two cylinders. Anyway my mechanic told me that in one cylinder the rings were in backwards. can that be? Motor seemed to run fine before two much boost. Engine had only 5000 miles on it. Thanks

I think there is a "top" and "bottom" to piston rings.

I think somebody did this once in the 944 turbo forum, it screwed up his cylinders pretty good. There are definately top and bottom rings, but I think it is more likely that he meant they were in the right place but installed upside down.

Yes, there are top and bottoms for the 1st and 2nd ring.. Rings crack due to detonation.. Not enough fuel for the boost that you were running.. I would definately inspect and measure your ring lands, and have the two pistons zy-glowed (checked for cracks)..

The rings also have a top and bottom, so not only is it possible to swap the two compression rings, but they can also be installed upsidedown
