Default Ruf K29 vs K27 Hyflow

I'd thought a few of you Ruf diehards would like to see a Modified Ruf K29 turbocharger. You can see that actual frame size difference between my K27 Hyflow and K29.. However, in stock trim the Ruf K29 wheel is actually smaller than the Hyflow.. What I have done is machined my new Hyflow 2 compressor wheel and turbine package into this Ruf K29..

This K29 was built for a customer that wanted more air.. His mechanic felt that with his extra fueling he could run a Hyflow 2.. Well, I ended up taking this one back in exchange for a Hyflow..

The turbocharger on the left is a K27 Hyflow, the turbocharger on the right is a Ruf K29 converted to my Hyflow 2.. I also had to increase the inlet of the K29 to 3" to fit the compressor wheel. Similar to the K27 "S" and K27 Hyflow "S"

Kevin,
I did'nt know you could modify the Ruf K29 turbo to your specs. Good news for future upgrades.

Kevin,
Impressive what you have been able to do with a small housing. Does the K-29 HF hybrid still exhibit an inertia lag with the larger internal parts?

Dave, the turbine will spool up quickly since it is based on the 7200 turbine wheel. However you can pour a gallon of milk inside of the larger housing.. The housing does have a higher A/R.. It will be sluggish vs the K27 housing. I could cnc a 80mm compressor wheel in that housing is one wanted to.. 80mm= Inducer (the diameter or inlet of the compressor wheel that you see)..

Well, a gallon of milk isn't exactly what I had in mind.......

Thanks, Kevin. As usual, great information!

So are you saying the mod'd K29 would/could yield more airflow on the top end, but just isn't as appropriate for most cars as the modern K27 hiflows? Just looking for clarification.

Bueller, Bueller... I guess the question remains, is the modified K29 outpaced by the K27 HF2 at the bottom end only or is the K29 less responsive across the range.

Luke, the modded K29 Hyflow 2 will better results for a race car that run above 6K.. Or a car that would run Daytona, and Talladega, or a drag car. The Hyflow 2 build into the K27 housing will be alot more responsive, and designed to build more boost sooner thus providing more torque under the curve..

Sorry to hijack this thread but I checked the "upgraded" turbo on my new 3.6T and it is from the German supplier FVD code 123 009 and their web site states:

Turbocharger sport 965 K27/29 to 550PS FVD 123 009

Can Kevin or anyone else offer any more info on this product - is it a K29 or a modified K27 like the ones supplied from IA.

From a users perspective it starts to boost just under 3000rpm, get 0.7 bar (on the stock gauge) at 3500 and blows hard all the way to the red line. I have no direct way to compare to the 3.6 stock turbo but compared to my 930 (stock) it comes in a bit earlier and blows much harder and longer.
Cheers

Paul

Hi Kevin

These are the best pics I could get. The blue plate states FVD then below it 123 009 but I could only see it with a small mirror so the camera could not get it.

It looks like the gasket for the oil supply is weeping too!

Cheers

Paul

I don't see why 3.6 liters would have too much trouble making use of a k29 at lower engine speeds.

The turbocharger pictured IS NOT a K29..

Look at my first pictures that I posted...

This is a K27-7006 turbocharger with most likely a K28 compressor wheel..
