Hi:

Here is a well-proven, sure fire "recipe" for super lighting on these cars. I speak from experience as I am NOT a young fellow any longer and I really need superior lighting,......

1) Install a pair of Bosch Euro H-4 lamp assemblies. These will replace the complete ones you currently have (if they are US-based sealed beams or H-5 units)

2) Install a set of 30A relays using 10g wire; one for the low beams and one for high beams. This takes the current load off the fragile hi-lo beam switch in the steering column and gets rid of the larger voltage drop in the headlight wiring circuit.

3) Install a pair of 100/130 H-4 bulbs in the lights. Use Narva, Phillips, or Osram bulbs.

If you follow the specific instructions as above, you will be STUNNED at the difference. Dare I say it?,........................its a "night & day" upgrade,...........................

Or you could go for the Philips Xenon headlights I'm using but it's a little on the expensive side.

There is no doubt the HID's are the way to go. They are generally plug n play. Easy peasy japaneasy.

Hi, I have a 1987 930. I read that they were some problems when using Philips Xenon. (no high beam for the H5) Is this correct ?

i have and also sell the HIDs and they give excellent lighting. yes you lose high beam but you dont even need it. Like steve said, with HIDs, you have to upgrade with relays or the light switch will get hot and burn out. I will post a pic tommarow with the HIDs on so you can see how nice they also look. They are exspensive. About 500-600.

Yes you are correct the Philip Xenons dont have high beam and low beam is quite strong to begin with.

Welcome to the forum.

Those of you with HIDs, are you using an H4 lens or the H5s? I dont think the H5s really work all that well to begin with and I would think the HIDs would only make matters worse. I love the HIDs in my truck, but I have been hesitant to put a set in my H5s. Does anyone make any kind of projector lense or anything like that? something like what the 993s use?

Hiya Steve,

I have always wondered if going the the Bosch H-4's is a major improvement over using the Hella H-4 lamps that fit in my "sugar scoops". I have grown to like the fat chrome and would hate to see it go in the quest for better lighting.

Hi Harry:

Optically speaking, they are not a major improvement.

I will tell you that the Bosch H-4 lamp assemblies (and the H-1 assemblies) perform a MUCH more important task; they seal the headlight bucket from water and thus rust problems far better than the USA lamp units with the removable sealed beam.

Hi Rudy:

Do you have the H-5 units on your car? Those are not upgradeable, if thats the case. H-4's & H-1's are the only headlights where there are several high wattage bulb options.

Take a sharp digital picture and e-mail it to me.

Do H 5's have replaceable bulbs? I was under the impression that H 5's were sealed beam.
