H5s have replaceable bulbs. I have some PIAA ones in mine. IMO it made my lighting bearable, but nothing great.

Hi:

PIAA bulbs are nothing to write home about and the connector on H-5's truly limits the current draw for any big-bulb potential.

Try the H-4 assemblies and you will be stunned at the difference. Its well worth the investment.

How about some more info on that HID conversion...where to buy parts, what to buy, etc? I have an '87, which I guess has the H5s.

I used a Painless wiring H-4 relay kit from Summit Racing and it works great! It has a relay for the low beam and the high along with a power relay feeding the low and high relays. Nice quality and the kit is around $80. That and a adjustable voltage regulator, some 90w/100w Phillips Narva bulbs, and Cibie E-code lamps and I was amazed at the lumen output! Search the 924/44/68 boards and you will find a ton of information.

It seems strange that Vertex is selling the H4 for $275 a set and the H5 for $475 a set. Latest Excellence ad.

There is a company named 928 that is selling an H-4 direct replacement kit for 911/930 sealed beam headlights for $99 on ebay. It includes the lenses, two 50 watt bulbs plus the reflector body. I asked them about H=5 replacement but have not heard back yet If you want to see them search under the name Porsche 911 turbo. After you get there, add headlights or H-4 to the search.

convert over to H-4 bulbs and get and h-4 hid kit. Then you will have all the light u need. you can buy the kits at any highend car audio shop. All the money you are spending on high wattage bulbs and wire harness for a couple more dollars you get the HIDs and there is no substitute.

Hi Steve,

I like your idea of installing 10 g wire, 30 amp relays and the H-4 units. Why replace the H-5s? I'd like to retain the original H-5s in my '87 911. Is that OK? Thanks in advance.

That's it!
I'm doing the upgrade on my car. It has H4's stock so I'm adding the brighter bulbs (80/100), 12G high quality wire, 2 hella relays, and shrinkwrap galore...
I'll post pics when I'm done later today.
