Wow...I forgot that I had those pics out there...That's been a long time ago. I still have 930.980.1156 and started the process of repainting the car back to the original color last year. Then got a new job, moved, etc. Now I am finally getting around to tearing it back apart and finishing the job.

My chassis number, 1164 (silver/two-tone red/black) is only 8 away from yours so perhaps they rolled off the assembly line in the same week. By the way, what is the original color of your car?

Four more of the last 50, ’79 930 chassis numbers posted at the 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo Registry on Facebook. This is a great site and you don’t need an account to access.

Very cool indeed! Do you know if your 930 has the original engine and transmission? ’79 chassis number 1155 (one from yours) has an engine number of 6891366 (930/63, California) and transmission number 7791842 (photo below, credit eBay). I believe 1155 was 1 of 9 of the last 50 930’s delivered with California engines (366-374).
My chassis number, 1164 (silver/two-tone red/black) is only 8 away from yours so perhaps they rolled off the assembly line in the same week. By the way, what is the original color of your car?

Production completion date: 12/31/79
Engine Number: 6890836
Transaxle: 792055
Paint code: paint to sample/9999, the tag on the door jam says 184-9-3, I have been unsuccesful at figuring out what that code means. There is also a secondary sticker that indicates its a 2 coat enamel system.
The interior color is: cork

Your car must be a very unusual paint to sample. I thought it might have been similar to the Talbot Yellow on 9309801170 posted on flickr:

Thanks for the info on your car. Is the date on your door VIN decal 12/79? Your chassis number is 8 before mine but your engine and transaxle numbers are quite a bit later production??

As far as the color goes, it's almost like a yellow/gold with pearl in it. Gives it a bit of glow - sort of a phosphours look.
Thanks

I guess that answers some of the questions earlier in the thread. There have been vin numbers that were higher with build dates that are earlier.
A '79 930 with a build date of 12/79 is the latest build I have heard of. This car may be one of the last ones for that year.

Sloane, it does look like 1156 corroborates that the chassis numbers may have not rolled off the assembly line in sequence! A well kept '79 Porsche 930 secret. 1156 does have a very high transmission/engine # to go with the 12/79 build. Only time will tell if there are more survivors of the last 50 that were built in 12/79.
kas930, can you post a photo of your landmark VIN decal?

If the dark blue paint to sample 930 that allegedly went to Al Holbert “comes out the closet” with a 12/79 build date, I don’t think a Porsche COA will help solve the mystery since they are known for so many errors. Just having a VIN decal with a 12/79 build date on a U.S. 930 is the smoking gun for 1156 and sets the bar for others to follow.

True, although 1155 was also paint to sample with engine/transmission numbers that were in sequence with the chassis number (albeit a California engine).

From what I have read over the years, Porsche produced the chasis, but didn't assemble the cars in order of the serial numbers. 1150-1200 may not all be "the last 50 produced for the US market".
