Default Quest for my father's old 76 911 S

I know this is a long shot, but I would love to possibly track down the 1976 911S that my father had when I was a kid.

He purchased it in 1978 and sold it in 1983 to a pilot for Eastern Airlines. The car was sold new at Manhattan Porsche-Audi in Rockville MD. We lived in Potomac MD an the buyer was from Virginia. The car was white, with maroon interior. The seats had the plaid cloth centers. The car had fog lights and a sunroof. No review mirror on the passenger door and at the time had a Blaupunkt AM/FM 8 track stereo.

I've looked around my parents' house to try to find some old paperwork that contains the VIN but no luck. Would love to surprise him by opening the garage and handing him the keys.

If anyone here has ever undertaken a quest like this, any help would be appreciated.

I would start with a phone call to your dad's insurance company. It may be a long shot, but perhaps they still have records back in 1983. If so, maybe they still have the VIN on file?

I thought about that. We both insurance with the same provider but I wonder if they would even disclose that information to me. I may ask my mother to do it. All I have left of the car is an old polaroid photo I took of it.

In the meantime, if the description of the car sounds familiar to anyone, please let me know.

GL with your search... the VIN is the only bet in making sure that is your dad's car. I wonder if talking to the originating dealer would have any records of the car. I commend you for your efforts...

Why not do a carfax with the vin to narrow the geography down, maybe dealership info etc. Only costs $10 and could get you started.

Carfax is the best bet possibly research vehicle registration records in the DMV if you can get a lead.
Manhattan no longer sells Porsche that marque has moved to Rockville Porsche Audi on Rockville Pike.
Manhattan now represents Land Rover ,Jaguar ,used to be Jaguar Triumph before P cars.
Could also possibly check with the local Porsche Club of America chapter Potomac and inquire should any of their members have registered a car with this description ,
best bet is to find the VIN somewhere in the house first though , old ticket ,registration docs, etc...

Carfax may not work in this case. I've tried that with for my old 914-6 and it rejected the VIN for not having enough digits. When was the changeover made to 17 digits? If after '76 the car won't be there.
