MSD Ignition

MSD Ignition
I have been reading the 101 Projects book. I am going to swap out the spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, and wires because I have no idea how long ago this was done.
Are there recommendations for plugs? Bosch?
I was also reading about the MSD ignition. The book seems to think this is better than the stock system. Is it worth swapping out?

Get NGK spark plugs as Bosch is having lots of stuff made in S America that is/are crap (coils and plugs).
An MSD has more 'juice' and is a nice alternative when your original box dies as it is cheaper, and coils are readily available (the original black Bosch coil is not). It also allows for more gap (spark) and I've used them in lots of applications.
You will need the proper plug wires (not solid cores as in the stock outfit) and possibly a unit to make your tach work properly (from MSD) some need it, some don't for some reason.
Some also change out the rotor cap I believe when converting.

Ok. It's got a Permatune box and coil in it now.
How about an MSD coil? PN 8207 Or stick with Bosch?
Will Bosch wires PN 09259 work? Or can you recommend something that will? Do I still need the ground straps?

JMHO,......
Permatunes have been especially unreliable so when (if) they fail, I replace them with an MSD 6AL and matching High-Vibration blaster coil.
Do NOT use an MSD coil with a Permatune otherwise you will spend $$$ right now.
Use any kind of supression wires you like. Just check the resistance of the plug connectors on a regular basis since these are prone to failure. I prefer Magnecor wires since they do not use those Beru connectors.
The ground straps are not needed if you are replacing the braided OEM wires.

Sorry, I meant to say that I would replace the Permatune box with the MSD PN 6420.
Is MSD PN for coil 8207?
Magnecor wires 6094? And no ground straps if I use these?
Thank you guys for all the help!

"An MSD has more 'juice' and is a nice alternative when your original box dies as it is cheaper, and coils are readily available (the original black Bosch coil is not). It also allows for more gap (spark)"
So! There's only so much energy that's required to ignite the fuel charge.
"Do NOT use an MSD coil with a Permatune otherwise you will spend $$$ right now."
That's not correct! The MSD coil can be used with any CDI unit including the
Bosch CDI. Interesting how "old wives tales" get used without any factual
data. Read here about coils under 'Typical Ignition Coil Values':
http://www.systemsc.com/diagnostic.htm
And about using a MSD as a replacement for a Bosch CDI (as published in so-called
technical books with questionable competence), that's a waste of money.

"So should I leave the Permatune in or switch to Bosch?"
Try and find a Bosch on eBay or from a Rennlister, but for sure don't continue to rely on the
Permatune. You may be able to sell it and offset the cost of the Bosch, or keep it as spare
if your alternator fails or someone jumps the battery backwards and damages the ignition.
Bottom line: Keep your Porsche as original as possible.
