"Do you know the part number?"

Look here under 'Bosch Ignition Part Numbers';

i sure wish I had the Bosch unit the shop took out to replace with the Permatune. Without the core, these things are expensive!

"i sure wish I had the Bosch unit the shop took out to replace with the Permatune."

Ask the shop for YOUR Bosch core.

It was replaced 5 years ago, I can't imagine they have it.

So! There's only so much energy that's required to ignite the fuel charge.

"Do NOT use an MSD coil with a Permatune otherwise you will spend $$$ right now."

That's not correct! The MSD coil can be used with any CDI unit including the
Bosch CDI. Interesting how "old wives tales" get used without any factual
data. Read here about coils under 'Typical Ignition Coil Values':
http://www.systemsc.com/diagnostic.htm

And about using a MSD as a replacement for a Bosch CDI (as published in so-called
technical books with questionable competence), that's a waste of money.
Read here for an analysis:
https://rennlist.com/forums/911-foru...n-exposed.html

Optimally, any CD ignition should be coupled with a E & I core "transformer" type of ignition "coil".

The traditional Kettering ignition coil operates quite differently vs what is required of a CD ignition coil. Spark energy is stored in the kettering coil over a period of time, while the points are closed, and then released to form a spark upon point opening.

With a CDI the energy to the inductive primary must be "force-fed" (ELI the ICE man) 300-400 volts applied, in order to quickly (overcome the primary inductance) provide a strong enough magnetic field in the E & I iron transformer core resulting in spark energy in the secondary.

This is NOT to say a kettering type coil will not function, just that for optimal advantage of a CD ignition a transformer type ignition coil should be used.

Ryan...remember the saying about opinions and aholes.....
MSD's are a good unit and less expensive than the stock unit (period). Check around and see what many of the top HP builders use. They are also readily available if you had a failure far from home.
All of these mods are easily reversible if you want 'stock' at some time.
The stock units are available but they are getting costly and some that 'argue' for them also sell them.

Yeah, I spend a lot of time on a diesel forum for my truck. There are a lot of opinions. I've done a lot of research other places and I think MSD is a good option, certainly better than Permatune.

This is what I'm thinking. CD 6420, MSD coil 8027, Magnecor wires 6094.

What do you think?

Actually, MSD coil 8222.

Part numbers look right?

I'm going to put this in tomorrow. I found this diagram on the Pelican forum. It sounds like besides the constant power wire, ground, and coil wires, everything else can be connected to the CDI plug with spade connectors. I just want to confirm before I do it. Does this look right?

Actually one question. I mounted the box where the old one was. The plastic cover covers about 1/3 of the box. I would assume the unit gets hot. Should it be uncovered? If so, what about cutting part of the cover off?
