Thanks Pete and Ed. Need to get my shopping list completed.

Anybody have suggestions on engine bay clean-up? What cleaners did you use, so on...

I've typically used brake cleaner. It isn't cheap, but its effective. Wear gloves and use a respirator.

Don't but single cans, it's not enough. Buy a case for starters!

Really should be updating sooner, but haven't really worked on the car since I removed the engine, until tonight that is...Got a hoist and a P201 yoke, looks awesome, got a material leveler and a second hand stand from Mr. Al Zim.
Removed the starter and trans. The bottm two bolts for the trans/engine mount are a bear to get a wrench on. Not sure how I'm going to torque them.
Made a stupid mistake tonight removing the CIS. I was real careful to make sure all of the mounting washers were removed from the studs and that there was no errant hardware sitting on top of the fan duct, that might fall into the intake ports. Removed the CIS as a complete unit and realized I missed a connector. No problem. Just disconnect while I'm holding the CIS up. The connector broke and I can' t find the missing peice. Looked in all the intake ports. #3 & 4 were open. Hooked up vacuum cleaner and checked vacuum bin. Nothing. Going to remove heat exchangers anyway maybe it will fall out of one of the cylinders then. Could be anywhere...I'll post pics tomorrow.

i am really intereted in your findings about the base gaskets vs other leaks , interesting point about it getting less as it gets further back ..

FIND THAT PIECE >> i once took the timing belt cover off my 944 and dropped a bolt ... looked for 3 days and would not start the car till i found that bolt .. eventually found it wedged between the timing belt and crank pulley .. can you even imagine ?

Definitely Ice. I looked till about 1am. Got a bore scope and I'll check cylinders 3 & 4 tonight. Probably find it when removing shroud. Kept thinking about 500-19b's spark plug insulator.

Yeah, Andy. Grapevine. You? I've seen several 911's running around Hall Johnson lately. Need to join local POC, Maverick, I think?

Well today was not as good as I thought. Couldn't get engine on engine stand. Apparently engine stand does not work with hoist. Stomski kit doesn't work with P201 adapter. If you're like me, nothing comes easy.

Had to cut down Stomski shims to work with yoke.
Had engine dangling in air on hoist for almost an hour trying to make it work. Not a good feeling...nearly had a heart attack.

Got another engine stand, try again tomorrow.

But on positive front. No broken head studs, wife bought me dinner.

Started clean-up. Probably going to replace all the bushings in the rear suspension. Going to atleast do a top end rebuild.

Feel so dejected about today.

Anyone have experience with the Jegs/Harbor Freight 1000 lb engine stand? Just make me nervous.

Thanks Reiver and Ed. Right now things are about small victories.
Are there really only two kinds of exhaust head studs, ones that have broken and ones that will?
Now I have to decide how far to go into the motor. Full rebuild, top-end or something less. 136k miles. All head studs intact. (still haven't found the rest of that connector)...might have a case through bolt leaking. Bore scoped #3. Lots of carbon, valve seals look good. Exhaust valves are white. I'll take some good pics of inside of cylinders, rocker housings and spark plugs.

Was talking to a Porsche mechanic friend today and at 136 k I'd prob just do the top end.
He has only seen one 911, in 40 years, that needed other that stock spec bearings regardless of miles. The bottom ends are good for 300+ k if maintained, unless you know that you have an issue like low oil pressure or something else.
I would replace the studs tho.
My advice only...others might say that's a 'false economy' but I'd do just that.
