Yeah Reiver, think I read Henry Schmidt/Supertech over on a Pelican thread say that a 3.2 he would definitely go into the case for rod bolt replacement but not a 3.0, because he thought the 3.0 probably wouldn't need it. But I also have a leaky case through bolt. Not bad, but it is leaking. Worth the extra grand or so to fix? Not sure.

If you want to fix it all, and it's a keeper, I'd do the whole thing, personally.

Ed has a point. You are at that mileage level where you could go either way.
If money is an issue I'd do the top end alone, I think you'd be just fine....you could go another 100-150 k on that bottom end without issue then do the whole motor...that would be in what...10 years or so?

Thanks guys. Think I'm going all the way. Cylinders are Kobenschmidt Alusil...so that's an issue. Going to have cylinders plated with Nikasil/Nicom if they check out. Re-use pistons (if they check out), and ring with Goetze rings. Zims will do heads. So maybe I can get this done before summer next year.

You know if the Alusils are still within spec the proper rings are still available from Porsche. I have a friend that has a handle on that.
Good luck and keep us in the loop.

Thanks Reiver. Not Goetze rings? Read more than anyone should about honing 390-T alloy. Sunnen has a lot of info. Just can' t find a machine shop that advertises expertise in working with Alusil cylinders. You 'd think with all the Mercedes and Porsches running around with Alusil lined blocks that are approaching or at rebuild conditions there would be plenty of shops to choose from. Read the super long but somewhat abrupt ending "Re-ringing Alusil cylinders" thread. Costa Mesa R & D machine shop seems to know about working with Alusil cylinders and blocks. Quoted 50.00 per cylinder to hone. US Chrome quoted 180 to replate with Nicom and hone.

I have asked the guy that rebuilt my 930-10, he's been a P mechanic for 40 years...I remember him telling me about alusils and most using the wrong rings...I fwd'ed your msg and am waiting for his 'get back'.

Nikasil plating is a good option but a friend can get the proper factory Alusil rings if you want to reuse what you have if it's in spec. Lots of folks rebuild Alusils with the wrong rings and it will work generally but not with the longevity we come to expect from these motors.

I'm sure Steve Weiner @ Rennsport or Ollie's in Lake Havasu can help you on options with the cyls.

Yeah, talked to a couple of local machine shops. Asked them about reconditioning Alusil/Reynolds A390 they acted like I was crazy. General response was "we do it all the time. Sunnen paste and felt, right?"
So probably going to try and recondition depending on how they check out. Need to keep the costs down as much as I can. Wife wants to do some remodeling.

John,
If your Alusils are still in spec you can just re ring with Goetze 930-103-98601 rings, the chrome ones designed for the Alusils.
You have to get these from Porsche as far as I know. Howard get's them from Brumo's.
Some will rec a rebuild with 930-103-98600, the steel rings but I've been told they will wear out Alusils pretty damn quickly altho will work initially.
Just passing on the info, and it's not my experience, just a friends mech experience.

Thanks Pat. Really appreciate the help. Not a lot of info on the rings. I've read phosphated iron, due to cylinder walls wearing the rings.
Had a bad day. So went to garage and looked for a victory. Got heat exchangers off. No broken studs. Another small victory.
