well it aint on mine .. they are never rusting with all that oil ..

you may be able to just buy plated hardware cheaper. plating that stuff might get pricey ... its amazing how quickly a budget rebuild gets out of control

I know the leaks sound bad, but only amounted to a couple if small drops a week. Probably leaked more when running.

Is plating the case through hardware worth it?
I had my fasteners & hardware Cad plated, and I wasn't overly impressed with it. I found there was too much buildup on the threads, especially on the case through bolts. I had to clean the plating off the bolts and capped nuts to get them to mate properly again. Some of my stuff didn't come clean enough in whatever bath they use, so the plating wasn't that great on those items either. I also found it flaked off the bolt heads as I wrenched on them.
For regular hardware, like fuel rails, linkages, brackets; sure, but I wouldn't bother with fasteners again.

Thanks. The case through bolts look great and then they're covered with tin. So from an aesthetics point it doesn't matter. Just wondering if I should do anything else to them as corrosion preventative.

So, realized yesterday that I might have screwed up. When removing case through bolts I got a little over excited and pushed 3 or so out without removing case through-bolt o-ring. Later I clean the bores. But now I'm paranoid I might have bits of silicone in oil galleys or behind a piston squirter.

Think I going to send case to Ollies for case plug removal and hot tanking.

I would assume you were doing that. I also had them check line bore.

In all honesty Ed, I was just planning on blowing out all the passages with carb cleaner and leaving case plugs in. Guess sometimes my obsessive worrying pays off.

To me, this is a one-time deal. I know the $ add up quickly, but it is worth it to do all that you can now.

Just wanna say, Pacific Oil Cooler rocks! Got my oil tank and cooler back today. Both look new. They painted the tank with an epoxy type paint. Post pics later.

Case cleaning. Starting with left side. This is kind of a preliminary cleaning. Will need to chamfer case through bores. Then send out for case oil plugs removed and galleys cleaned. Tank it or parts washer.

Looking good and it'll pay off in the end....but all started with "Taking off the chain box covers"....the definition of the slippery slope we have all slid down...big smiley face here.

Here's something I don't here too much about, "Where do I put everything after things come back from...and it's really time consuming to organize everything."

Everything is back. It's all in my hands now. (scary) Haven't yet unboxed the case or the rods. Just opened the crank box. Had Ollie's remove oil galley plugs, clean and polish crank. Looks amazing.
More pics to follow when I get the stuff a little more organized for assembly. First order of business will be to check bearing clearances this weekend.

Should spray the crank with anything to prevent rust? Just sprayed a little PB Blaster on it.

This is the view I've had for the last couple of weeks when I have a hour or so in the evening. Cleaning parts. Mostly nuts and washers I don't plan on re-using, (I know, it doesn't make sense). Just wanted the reference parts cleaned.

Darren at Zims did the head work. New springs, valves and guides.

Crank back from Ollie's. Those guys are really nice. Linda was great to deal with. They are a really good value to.
