Chiropractor says butt in and swing legs one by one method is best BUT if you are too inflexible (or too tall) to get your head in you have to improvise. If it's possible to lower the seat that might help. Also they make swivel pads for helping those with bad hips/low back. Having something to support you -I hate to say it but kind of like a walker type device-at least in your garage or wherever you most commonly enter the car, is better than relying on the steering wheel or the door frame.

Getting in, I bend my upper body down inside the cabin first, putting my right hand on the center console for balance and then put my butt in the seat before bringing in my legs last.
