Hey there......
I'm brand new to the forum (yeah, I know) and I'm about to buy a 2000 911 C2 w/41k miles on it from a good friend. I know him, I know the car.

Should I get a Pre-Purchase Inspection?

It makes a weird noise on start-up. No valve noise. Rather, a humming for a split second after it fires up. I'm thinking the starter....

Other than that, it's a gem.

Any advice, criticism would be appreciated.

A early 996 is one of the most troublesome Porsche 911 maybe ever. Cut back on quality materials and poor fit and finish. Do a search for "Intermediate Shaft Failure.". Basically your motor blows up. 1st year of a watercooled engine in a 911 also doesnt bring it much love. Prices for these cars are very cheap and that's he reason. I would pass on the 996 all together. Not Porsche's best car.

I am not sure you would get the same response as above on the 996 forum. ( Although i am not saying I disagree with it )

But i would suggest getting on tthe forum for your 996 in the water cooled section. They will definitely be able to tell you what to watch out for .

I would definitely never buy a 996 3.4 personally .. or any 996 for that matter .. but since there is a mod on here that has a 996 i will say they are great cars

Thanks guys. Well, looks like I'm buying though. He's never had an issue and I've driven the car several times and I love it...........

Before you pay any money....Please do a internet search on Porsche Intermediate Shaft Failure. It is catastrophic if it happens and it all starts with a little engine noise.

Actually a 99' with no "e" throttle makes a pretty good base for a race car.

i'd be throwing the IMS guardian on that baby pronto ... and the bearing when the clutch fell out .. assuming of course the clutch fell out before i heard the " death rattle"

Hope you have a extra $10-15k put aside for an engine possibly. ALWAYS get a PPI, no matter who the seller is!

I think this forum has a lot of 1978 through 1988/9--- 911s. If you are a first time buyer you may want to check out this group of cars as many think they are a better buy for many reasons.

I did run into a couple of water cooled 911s in the last couple of years that had problems and were Really cheap. I have the area, tools, and skill to do the work. After spending a week on the phone with guys who know and build these things, I was happy I did not try for the really killer deal and end up killed.

Porsche did make some undesired models and had some bad years within some model numbers, 911 being one of them. The Porsche name does not make perfect. Overall they are great cars, but can be really costly.

Good luck and don’t be afraid to ask questions here and with anyone that will talk to you. Porsche is a small friendly world, most part.

Just got rid of the 996 for a 997 C4S Cab.

I had no issues w/the 996. In fact, I loved it. I put a Fister Exhaust on it and a K&N cold air intake. However, I couldn't get past the Boxster headlights so, I sold it.

I would highly recommend a 996 for a beginner 911 guy like I was.

Glad it worked out for you . From further reading i discovered the very early 996 1999 and maybe even 2000 had the double row bearing. it wasnt until after they went to the single row bearing that things really hit the fan ... up to 2008 I think ...
