Default The right audio set up for a 88 911 Cabrio

Hi all,

I just purchased this 88 911 black cabrio with 65k miles on her and she is in pristine shape. Although she still has her original radio, I am looking for something more modern. I will keep the original radio but am looking for suggestions for a head unit, sub woofer, amplifier and speakers and want to spend in the $2-$3k range if possible. Thanks for your suggestions.

I'll take some pics today. You'll be able to do this
Easy for less than 500.00.

Ditch the stereo and (heavy) loudspeakers, get a good free flowing exhaust system! The volume **** is under your right foot...!!!

The problem is you will never get the right environment in a Cab for good sound. They are just too noisy with the top up and down. I am in the same situation with my Targa. I have seen so many hack aftermarket stereo upgrades. Its a classic car at this point. Keeping the interior as stock as possible is the most desirable. Even the stock head unit looks the best. You could just upgrade the speakers and maybe a amp and see if you live with it. I am using a ipod cassette adapter an it works great. Once you start cutting up the panels to fit bigger speakers, there is no going back.

I definitely don't want or intend to do any cutting. But have gotten addicted to satellite radio. That at least would be nice!

+1, I put a amazing sound system in my 911 the year I got it. At the time people told me I was crazy and said I would never listen to it. They were right! I haven't turned it on in years.

I am the same way with my IPod. I would get a cassette adapter and a portable sat radio unit. Nice thing is you can take it out of the car easily and use it mowing the lawn, etc...

Porsches in general are not good candidates for hifi audio. I suggest a set of decent speakers that will screw into the doors without mods, and an updated head unit that will support your needs. Don't cut any wires or metal.

This link has some decent looking coaxial drivers...I've never listened to them, take it on face value. Garden variety speakers are expensive in my opinion and not quality at all. The speakers here have all the quality materials and specs as much higher priced speakers and are very resonably priced. I have a bit of a fine-tuned ear but do my listening in the house. I think these speakers at Madisound are probably as good if not better than anything you would find at the consumer quality level anywhere else.

Thanks Whale. What do you think about the $476 speaker system? Will they all fit without cutting? How many speakers does a stock 911 have anyway?

4 speakers in yours. I have 4 Clarion speakers and head unit in my 911 and they sound amazing. But not as good as the flat 6! Serisouly, if you want a sound system go for it. Sometimes on long drives on the highway it is a nice feature to have.

I have more than that budget in both amps and cables/ fuses. In your case, the car is a time capsule. Keep it stock, or use the Crutchfield kit to change the head unit, but give up on quality audio.

What is the Crutchfield kit you are talking about?
