Post Lost Dipstick !!

OK, I've done something REALLY stupid..

First Porsche (911SC)..had it two months..just clocked my first 1000 miles and thought that I would check the oil.

LOST THE DIPSTICK DOWN THE OIL RESOVIOUR (IE. MISSED THE SMALL TUNNEL DESIGNED FOR THE DIPSTICK AND DROPPED THE STICK DOWN INTO THE ENGINE!!).

As you can probably tell, i'm not a mechanic!

Please tell me what to do... I've tried to find the stick with a magnetic rod, but no luck. Am I going to have to get somebody to take the oil sump to pieces!!!

Please help, I am at my wits end and totally f***ed off at myself..

So you did it too.

(you, me and others on the aircooled forum, not to mention those who wouldn't admit it).

I was able to see mine by looking down the filler neck and retrieve it with a bent coat hanger.

If you can't do that, it's safe to leave it in the bottom of the reservoir.

Buy another one at a Porsche dealer out of town and pay cash or go to your local dealer and say " I let my brother borrow my 911 and the dumb ...)

Dazza-
No dooubt others with more knowledge than I will reply, but rest assured, you are not alone - this topic has come up before on this list - the consensus was "no problem" & nothing do about it. You can probably find the thread(s) using the search engine. In the meantime, relax, have a beer, and congratulate yourself for checking your oil!

Thanks for the quick responses, guys...

You have made me feel a whole lot better and I can sleep tonight now !

I am certainly not going to try to retreive the little bugger, given your advice.

Any ideas as to where I get buy another dipstick online ? Are all Porsche sticks the same ?

Thanks again,

Dazza.

I also did the unthinkable! On a Sunday afternoon, almost dark, after a few adult beverages. Thought sure it was in the guide hole!(I dreamed about my screw-up all night!)

The next AM, I got out there w/ a flashlight and a coathanger, crained my neck 'til it hurt, and worked it out of there. It was very difficult to see in there, but I lucked out and snagged it.

If I had it to do again, I might just leave it in there. After I got it out, I thought that I could have messed up the oil level sender unit. (I could just see me straining and pulling part of it up through the throat of the tank!)

Any way, I'm not saying it won't happen again,
but I hope I find a new way of educating myself.

My next episode will tell the tale of me dropping the fan pulley shaft nut down into and under the front crankshaft pulley well. What a way to start a maintenance day!

And to think I thought I wouln't have time for fishing after i got my P-car!

I posted the same topic last July when it happened to me for the first time on my 81 SC that I've had since new. This is a summary of what I was told: 1) Leave it-it won't hurt. 2) Don't try to get it out with a coat hanger-- you may damage the sending unit 3) Don't try to get it out with a magnet-- it's non-ferous. 4) Lot's of people have created ingenious devices to prevent it from happening again-- I'm sure they'll send them to you. I left it and got a new one for $10 and it's been fine since.
