Red face F is for fail....

So I tried to go the cheap way and get my "new" 1980 Targa NJ state inspected at a free state run facility, for which I was chastised by the Autohaus folks (always use a private facility with a 20 year old P-car! Pay the $75), and failed on three accounts.

1) Rear licence plate lights, easy fix
2) Gas Cap, easy fix, ordered new one from Pelican
3)Emissions
HC standard is 300 mine read 326
CO% standard is 3.00 mine read 7.86
The emissions is obviously the greatest concern, shop indicated that its running rich, mixture needs to be cut back a bit.

Anyone have experience with passing NJ emissions inspection?
Does this sound like the easy fix?

Assuming your cat is functioning properly and your O2 sensor is in good shape, you should be able to pass. Also helps to have fresh oil and properly adjusted valves.

Based on your CO% of almost 8, I'd say you were running a "tad" rich.

Lean the mixture to below 3% for the re-test. If possible, I'd pay the $75 and have the re-test done at Autohaus or some other Porsche shop.

Im frugal and hate to pay more expenses than I have to (esp. for something like a State inspection where the fees are paid by our tax / vehicle registration dollars!) so I opted for taking it to the NJ inspection station - My '87 911 went right through so it can be done.

One thing I had going for me was a recent tune-up & valve adjustment.

In addition to the concerns of passing the inspection I was worried too about the individual who was actually driving the car through the various portions of the line (I liked it better when the vehicle owner drove it through) - dont ya know I was watching (and making sure she knew I was watching) the entire time! (with my most "sincere concerend parent" look! ;-)

state inspections suck....
Good luck,

Dan

having past California emissions (on the second try) I know what its like not to pass. Mine was rather simple. Cap,rotor, plugs and wires. Probably could have used a new 02 sensor but I passed. Parts were $400 but I passed in Cali where its the worst. Tune-up. Best advise.

I watched like a hawk the whole time, for a guy who moves cars through a line for a living he drove it like a chump, must have stalled it at least 1/2 dozen times....Don't even know how they could have gotten accurate readings....

Car goes to Autohaus on Monday so will let you know what they say.

I assume that if its running "rich" now it will run better after it is turned back, right?
