Engine upgrade

Sam for the costs involved would it not be just better to go buy a Turbo and sell yours . That looks to be beautiful unmolested example. Why not keep it that way ?

FWIW, my 3.2 was sent to Andial some years ago and was converted to a 3.4 with some sportier cams, a better MAF, and some chip work. It perked it up a bit and has a nice sound at idle. Much easier than doing an engine swap, but less gain as well.

The 3.0 is ok but can't keep up to the newer generation cars. The 3.6 is newer than the 3.3 but I like the fact that I can add on to the 3.3 without too much difficulty.
Actually, the 3.6VR would have cost me more than the 3.3 to convert. My net cost after selling my 3.0 hopefully will end up around 10-11k. Would have been cheaper if I knew how to do it or if you guys were nearby but attempting this for the first time myself would be a mess I'm sure.

This may have already been covered in other threads, but I gotta ask it anyway...
What have you done, or what will you do to stop this monster?
If I had $10,000 to blow on go fast the first $5,000 I'd spend would be on really big brakes and the suspension to handle it.
Horsepower would be way down my list. Sorry, but speed kills.
....and my 3.2 is scary quick to the point that I always come home with a sore neck....are the 3.0's dogs???

I wouldnt put a Turbo in a stock SC unless your improving brakes and suspension and maybe even the trans/clutch. probably need at least 5-7k on those items and thats if you do it yourself. Half the battle on these cars is balance. Need to think through this abit more in my opinion... The Stock SC is just not equiped to handle 300hp...

The above two comments are why I posted my recent experience with my old car. The engine part of it is only half the deal. And that's with a self-build. I think we know here that a "go fast in a straight line" 911 (or any car for that matter is pretty boring after the third or fourth time you wind it out to............maybe 120? Then what?
In any case, I've got a bunch of 3.3 (and 3.0) 930 engine parts around.

All great points. This is a $20K+ project by the end. That 930 may not be a bad idea after all...
I love seeing other people dump gobs of cash in their cars!

I like the look of the SC more than the turbo and do not plan on butchering it. The body and paint is all original and I plan on maintaining that. A few rock chips here and there adds character as well . The only addition I will have to make to the body is a tea tray. I've seen it on other SC's and can live with it.

Second, ask yourself if you will really want to keep this car a LOOONG time because it will be expensive... More expensive than most would likely estimate.
The case of James' car is very instructive (the one Iceman posted the video on). That car was VERY reasonably priced when James tried to sell it and he followed up with some significant further price drops. I really couldn't believe how inexpensive it ended up being. This was a car that was done right, top-to-bottom, had an EXCELLENT local reputation and was still hard-to-sell, even at a bargain price. Fact seems to be, people don't pay well for extensive mods.
So, what do I mean?
Well, if this is a long-term dream project of your ultimate 911, then go for it.
However, if you can imagine yourself driving this for a few years and then hankering after a new experience... then you will be much better off putting up with the flares of a real 911 Turbo... Pouring a lot of money (and it will be a LOT of money) into a project, and then realzing that, if you want to sell it, you will get very, very little back can make you reach for the razor blades!
Summary: Evaluate dispassionately how long you will want to keep this car. Everyone thinks forever, but that is often not the case...

20k is conservative.
I did alot of this to my SC.. Its not a Turbo but a complete engine overhaul with some goodies which will be comparable to what you will spend turning your 3.0 into a 3.3...
83 SC Targa -- 3.2SS, GT2-108 Dougherty Cams, 9.5:1 JE Pistons, Supertec Studs, PMO ITB's, MS2 ECU, SSI's, Recurved Dizzy, Backdated Dansk Sport Stainless 2 in 1 out, Elephant Polybronze, Turbo Tie Rods, Bilstein HD's, Hollow 21-27 TBs, Pirelli PZeros...
I havent touched the brakes other than to overhaul them with all new stock parts. Also havent touched the Trans / installed LSD, etc. I also did 90% of the work myself with no labor costs. Id say this ran me 27k to date plus the price of the car... I have another unrelated 7-8k in the car. If you really want a turbo... Buy a turbo. Can get a great example for 30-35k that will have all the upgrades... youll never get back your money on an SC when your dropping 3-6k at a time on things like brakes, induction, suspension, exhaust, etc.

No doubt on that, hence my "+". I'm using rough numbers based on his $10-11K estimate on the engine. I think that low for starters.
<---------
See the Red number next door? I've got almost $20K in the motor alone, and it's not exotic. I've got another $3 or 4K in brakes, and probably $6K in suspension. It is ludicrous, how the $ fly at you faster than a starfield in the Millenium Falcon at "hyperspeed".

Here is a 3.2 turbo look that has had a turbo added a few years back. Seems Spencer was happy with the results...:rock_on:

Dont you love how people will drop a turbo or high HP engine in a car and then complain when they dont get the results they are looking for?
