I bought a 914 a year old in 1974 and drove it for about 2-1/2 years. Test drove $80,000 worth of Porsches in late 1976 in El Paso Texas before shipping out to Germany. (That was several Porsches in those days). I sold my 914 to the number 2 guy on my list of buyers for that car in Dec 76 and ordered my new 911S in January, picking it up at Zuffenhausen in March 1977. Can someone do the math? I didn't waste a lot of time. The time you are THINKING about it is the time you're not driving one.

I've been looking for about 7 years, posted this 5 years ago:

My problem has been money- I've always wanted a 911, but money is super tight as I have 3 dependents and live in the Bay Area. I was looking at 911's for 5k (all rusty or non-running), then had to up it to 10k, then 15k, then 20k, then when the recession hit, I am back down to finding a 3.2/G50 for 15k.. its still hard to find one with a rebuild and working A/C for 15k in red, white or black. I have several final or close to final candidates-but they all have > 200k miles on them. In any case, good to know that you (the original poster) had a 997 and still sought out a 3.2 G50 - I think in due time they will skyrocket in price (but I hope to have one BEFORE they do). Marvin

umfan866: Read woot's post again; he bought a 915.

You're doing yourself a disservice looking for a G50 only. You may post again in 1, 3 or 7 that you're still looking. Also, am I reading correctly that you want one with a rebuilt engine? Why? These things can run forever, if maintained. Personally, I'd say you need to examine your criteria. If you couldn't find a nice 911 for $20K before 2007-8, then something else is missing here.

Ed,

Well I never really had the 20k - it never really materialize, so lets call it 20k. But right now I do have 15k cash ready to buy due to refi-ing our minivan at 2.99% at what is still valued at. We can and are making the payments. I wanted a rebuild done because the last thing I want to is buy a car and have to pay $10 for a rebuild and the 87-89's suffer in particular from that valve guide wear issue. Now if I got an 84-86 I would worry less about buying it with a rebuild. in fact there is a nice 86 that I know of that has everything I want (red/black, working A/C, some tasteful mods, polished fuchs, chip, etc, 120k miles) for 16-18k -- it doesn't have a rebuild but I am less worried about it. I keep going back to that car- may need to just go pick it up because I am indeed running out of patience thks. Will re-read the post also.

I would not worry about a potential rebuild until it hits over 300,000 miles and is burning tons of oil.

A proper PPI should determine the health of the motor.

Have patience.

John
