911 SC Rear Spoilers -- Question for historians
I have now seen three different "factory" rear spoilers on a 911 SC, and I am trying to figure out which ones were offered in which years, and in which markets. I am not interested in the turbo tails, only the "SC" tails -- whatever they may be! If anybody has any knowledge of this subject please respond:
1) A fiberglass(?) tail seen on at least 2 1978 models. It has a grill where the normal 911 grill would be, then a flat painted surface that goes back to the rubber lip, which seems to be the same as the '84-'89 Carrera one.
2) The common '84-'89 Carrera tail seen on a 1983 SC, though I'm not sure if this is factory, or transplanted from a later car.
3) An all-rubber tail seen on a 1980(?) UK model, similar in shape to the other two. It's not just a rubber lip, but the whole things appears to be made from that same sort of rubber, or is at least covered in it.
I've been told that the 1980 Weissach edition had yet another tail, though I have not been able to confirm that.
Thanks in advance for your input!

Thanks Bill and Jay. I was actually involved in that first discussion, though I had not seen a number of the later responses. This clears up at least two of my questions:
First, it appears the Carrera tail (# 2 in my original list) did come as an option on the later SC's.
Second, the Weissach model did in fact have a different tail altogether -- somewhat of a variant of the first one on my list. While that one is flat across with a unique grill built into it, the Weissach one slopes down toward the deck lid, and it looks like it has the standard 911 deck lid grill.
Does anybody have any ideas about the third tail I wrote of -- the all rubber one? Where, when and on what models was this offered?
Thanks again,
Sean

The "all rubber" tail was offered from the factory as early as the mid 70's...
I have a friend with a 1977 that had/has one. We changed it to an electric 964 tail not long ago.
Here is the FACTORY part # to confirm: 911 512 019 02 (named- PU-Rear spoiler).

I could be wrong, but I don't think the "Carrera" tail was ever offered on the SC by the factory. I'm pretty sure the Carrera tail was introduced with the '84 Carrera. I have seen the Turbo tail factory fitted on '83 SCs. BTW, my '81 has a Carrera tail, but it didn't leave the factory with one.

According to literature I've read on the SC's, the "Carrera" tail became the rear spoiler on the SC's starting in the 1982 model year. If this is true, then '82 & '83 SC's equipped with factory spoilers had this one. I really have no evidence of this, however, aside from what others have written.
I'm also having second thoughts about the Weissach Edition having a different tail than other early SC's. It could be the picture I saw of the Weissach just gives the illusion that the grill portion is more concave, because aside from that they are identical. As an aside, this tail also appears identical to the original Turbo Carrera tail, minus an additional grill closer to the outer edge.
I am pretty sure Michael B is right about the all-rubber tail being offered earlier than the SC -- perhaps back to '74 or '75. I am not sure it was ever offered on the SC in the States. The only picture I've seen of that tail on an SC was from a UK magazine (911 & Porsche World?).
Amazing how many variations Porsche made isn't it?

I believe the "Carrera" tail that the literature you mention is referring to is the tail from the 1975 "Carrera"... Which is very much like the 1980 Weissach version and very much like the '75-'77 non-intercooled Turbo tail (3.0 version).
I also know that in 1983 on a standard SC you could order the '78-'89 Intercooled Turbo tail (3.3 version) as I have seen that done. I would guess you could get them on earlier SC's as well.
The 3.2 liter "Carrera" tail (my favorite) was not available until 1984.

We're getting there!
As to the "Carrera" tail being offered on the '82 & '83 SC's, Bill Gregory wrote in a prior thread:

quote:
"...the rear spoiler was available for all years on the 911SC's. There were two styles, which changed in September 1981 (MY 1982) to the Carrera version. You can buy a kit from Porsche with the Carrera spoiler and all nuts and bolts needed, it's part number 911.512.909.00....
You can find the information above in the Porsche 'Parts and Technical Reference Catalog for 911's 1974-1989'".

The part number given is for the '84-'89 tail, so going by the aformentioned book, that tail was available in '82 & '83 as well. Of course, who knows if this is correct. Does anybody own a '82 or '83 that came factory equipped with this tail?
I'm sure you could order a "turbo 3.3" tail (and just about anything else!), but they generally only came with the "turbo-look" cars, as far as I know. Personally, I don't like the large turbo tail on the narrow-body car.
My favorite is also the standard 3.2 Carrera tail that my '88 came equipped with. My brother and I were considering adding spoilers to a '78 SC, and were wondering if that all rubber one (which he found an example of for sale) was "factory correct".
Anybody else care to chime in?

Sean,
that's funny, i also noticed that all-rubber tail on the SC pictured in 911 & Porsche World magazine - and thought it was pretty bizarre.. have never seen one of those in person on an SC.
Only versions i've seen from the factory are the standard SC tail - and the Weissach tail - which i'm not too fond of.

The Weissach tail appears to be similar (if not identical) in shape to the '76 Turbo tail - but without the small intercooler(?) vent. I believe that it was the first one that people referred to as a "whale" tail. I have a (not particularly good) copy of this tail on my '80 SC. Later they apparently widened this version and it became the IROC tail. As far as I can tell, it's been a long time since I saw a real Weissach version, these were integral with a fiberglass decklid - as opposed to the later Carrera tail which bolts to the standard steel decklid.
Take a look at www.GT-Racing.com for a variety of tails.

The poly-urethane tail was an option from at least '76 mostly on ROW spec cars. It was also part of the sport package on english lhd versions. PET lists it as optional even earlier but I have never seen one earlier than '76
Here is a pic of one on my '76 Carrera 3.0

There were also 2 similar looking f/g tails one on the 930 w/ a small vent and one used on n/a cars like the Carrera 3.0 RS. These were unlike the later tails in that they were a 1 piece design like the Ducktail and replaced the entire engine lid. Later tails were 2 piece designs that bolt to the stock steel lid.

Thanks Bryan, Maurice.
So, here's a question then: Is the Weissach tail, in fact, the "standard" SC tail (at least on '78-'81 SC's)? From photos, it looks the same -- though some on this board have indicated their standard SC tail is slightly different.
And yes, I also think it's the same as the Turbo Carrera tail, but without that extra grill -- though those turbos were not intercooled.
And what about this all-rubber one? Was it ever acutally available on U.S. model SC's?
Thanks all!

Bill thanks for the reply. Sounds like that may have been a ROW only tail, unless somebody can prove otherwise.
And perhaps I'm wrong about the Turbo Carrera tail being similar, but the SC tails (and the Weissach tail if it's in fact different) appear to be a one-piece fiberglass unit also. Clearly the '84-'89 Carrera tail, and the later 930 tails are two-piece units.
