I don''t think the "Carrera" tail was available pre-'84. If I remember correctly (Bill -- apologies if I'm wrong), Bill Gregory mentioned that he got the info about the Carrera tail (w/ the '84-'89 part number) being available on the '82-'83 SC from a book. I think that book is incorrect, but I'm willing to be proven wrong.

I saw the all-rubber tail on a US SC once, but the owner told me he added it himself at some point. I've never seen it as original equipment on a US car.

I think the Weissach tail is the same as the "SC" tail. It looks the same to me as the 3.0 Turbo tail, but w/o the Turbo tail's extra vent.

I've got to admit that the only cars I have seen the P/U tail on oem are ROW. I also think that maybe 1980 was the last year for the P/U tail

Well, for what it's worth, here are my conclusions based on what we've learned here, research on the internet and of Porsche literature, direct knowledge, and knowledege of other Porsche owners:

1. My brother claims to have seen a few '82 and '83 SC's with the Carrera 3.2 tail for sale recently, so I'm concluding that the book is accurate on that one. Check out Ebay and you'll usually find a couple.

2. The '78-'81 SC (including Weissach ed.) tail is the one-piece, combination decklid/spoiler fiberglass unit. It was the only "SC" tail offered in the U.S. during this time. I've been told that this tail is extremely rare. The Turbo Carrera tail is the same with the exception of additional vents aft of the grill.

3. The all-rubber tail seems to be ROW only, circa '76-'80. Not too much data on this one, but I'll go with that for now.

4. There were other one-piece spoiler/decklids used on the 70's Carreras, like the IROC tail, that is similar to the early SC tail, but wider. There may be others as well.

Of course, I'm willing to be proven wrong on all of these! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Sean -

While the factory '78-'81SC/Weissach tail is rare (apparently there were only about 400 Weissach cars produced), GT Racing does sell a copy of the almost identical '76 Turbo tail. It's one piece (all fiberglass instead of fiberglass with a rubber edge like the factory version) and does have the small intercooler vent. To my eye, the only thing that looks as good on a narrow body SC as the Weissach/'76 Turbo tail is the RS ducktail which, of course, is completely incorrect for SCs.

Here's my 2 cents.

The 1976 turbo whale tail looks like the weissach tail but has a small secondary grill in the flat area between the rubber lip and main grill for an auxillary cooler. The 77-78 turbo tail looks just like the 76 tail but the secondary grill is larger. The rubber lip for the 76-78 tails and the weissach tails looks like they are interchangable. Theses tails are a one piece engine lid/tail design.

The rubber lip from the 1982 carrera style tail is different from the above mentioned tails.

I think the '82-'83 SCs seen for sale with the Carrera 3.2 tail had them added after they left the factory (and after the '84 Carrera was intrduced). I have yet to see an SC with this tail that came with it from the factory -- I don't think the factory manufactured it until the '84 Carrera. Could be wrong...

BTW, my own SC (late '81 -- May '81 build) has the Carrera tail, but it was added by the previous owner.

Also, the '78 Turbo was the first to have the bigger tail that was used through the end of 930 production -- not the '77 style tail. It was the first year to have the intercooler that required the bigger tail.

I've seen a few '82 and '83 SC's where the owner claims the tail was on there as OEM, but could never confirm it. In fact I've only ever seen 2 SC's with an OEM fiberglass tail (confirmed, original concours cars), and they were both '78 models. So, who knows?

The '78 Turbo, being the first intercooled 930, does in fact have the larger tail used until '89. A similar tail (if not the same) was used on the 964-body turbos also.
