'84 M491 versus '86 aftermarket widebody
Yes, I am about ready to sh%t or get off the pot and maybe I have 'overthought' this whole P-car buying experience, but its my first one and I'm really trying to make sure I don't burry myself from day 1.....so I'm still leaning on you guys.
So, heres the question.
I have narrowed down my search to 2 cars...Both with clean Carfaxes.
1. 1984 911 M491. Sunroof coupe A/c. Black/black. 98,000 miles. new Bilsteins all around, Steve Wong chip and MK stainlees cat bypass. Original whale tail, flag mirrors, and door panels or GT Racing ducktail, aero mirrors and RS door panels. Also extra set of BBS. Only service records available are from last 3 years....and they are for basic service (renntag in Nashville) with a valve adjustment. No track time, minor rust under battery (thats it). Paint is 8.5 out of 10 (10 being highest). This guy is pretty inactive Pelican Member. I was able to upload the few PICS I have here.
2. 1986 911 Porsche Coupe with Custom 930 Turbo Body Key Features 1. Professionally installed Turbo 930 Body. 2. 70,000 original miles. 3. Ruff Rims With Bridgestone Tires 4. Bremtek Brake Kit $2000 Value 5. T & D Performance in Campbell California Performed the Following: a. At 26,000 Miles Complete Engine Rebuild/Hop Up b. Regrind Cams to C-4 c. Valve Job / Fly Cut Chamber d. Twin Plug Cylinder Heads e. Match Port Intake Manifold f. Bore Cylinder to 100mm Pistons g. Carrello Rods h. $ 15,900 Total Cost Engine Work 6. Transmission Re-Built at 30,300 Miles $ 1,700 7. Just Normal Service the Last 15,000 Miles. 8. Only driven 2000 miles per year. 9. Garage kept only used in summer. If you must have PICS, here is link.
What would your preference be and why ?
Thanks.

On the 1986 - What pistons and cylinders did they use on the engine rebuild? What about headstuds? Did they go with ARP rod bolts? HP?
I'd probably be inclined to go with the more original m491 - it will probably keep it's value better.

The '86 was originally owned by guy out of Carmel Ca, his intent was to race it in a non-turbo class @ Laguna Seca and built it for that class. He then decided not to race it.....the second owner took the rollbar out and has driven 2k miles per year the last 10 years.......however, I don't know the specifics to your Q's.

That 84 sure is attractive based on the description. All things the same, that is a much better investment. Factory 491 is a safer car for sure. All the cool stuff like the M&K, door panels, etc. are REAL nice on a solid factory car. Pics would help, but you would never look back if it checks out.

I won't buy a car without seeing or driving it, and a PPI. BTDT.
If you were to check out the two, one would probably be superior. Very rarely are two cars equal.
I personally am a sucker for built cars that run out and handle well.

M491 for sure.
Factory Original will hold it's value better.
A conversion
You never know what someone did to covert it. Did they replace the whole panel or cheat and just spliced in the flairs?
And most of the time they didn't do all the stuff the factory did on an opt M491, like the turbo brakes, suspension, etc.
Resale, if you ever do want to get rid of it, it not as easy of a car to unload.

Pics are a little inconclusive, but my gut is M491 all the way.
FYI makmov, the factory just welded flares (rear) on up until (86 or 88 iirc)
let us know what you find out Shannon.

I like the earlier sport seats and the H4's on the 1984. I'd ask for some current pictures on it. Wow - just realized you are from Conroe - I went to Conroe HS many moons ago.
On the 1986 - if you are building a race car - why would you keep the AC bracket and heater blower?? I also don't care for the sugar scoops and boxed rockers. I do like the Ruf wheels (even if they are heavy) but prefer the one piece Ruf bumper to the ruf valance...
