I believe its the 5-10-15 discusion - 5 you can buy some junky rebuild that's lasts all week and throw it away, 10 you get a quality rebuild and 15 is gonna but a hell of a smile on your face

This seems to vary by region, but in CA I'd say a high quality full rebuild by a well respected Porsche specialist will run you in the $15K-$19K region. Of course this depends on what you mean by 'full'.

I would give Steve Weiner a call at Rennsport. Even though he's in Portland, he'll help you, he's a great guy and super-knowledgeable. He can probably recommend a shop near you and he can also tell you where you can and where you shouldn't cut corners.

^+1,000,000 Steve is an outstanding resource to the Porsche community. He really knows his stuff and willingly helps you. Great guy and I can't say enough good things about Steve.

No affiliation other than I am a long-term, very satisfied customer of Rennsport Systems and Steve Weiner!

Yeah, paint with a broad brush. I've previously offered a $13K RMG (Grigsby, look him up) 10-15K rebuilt for ~$6K exchange, with no interest. I did all manner of ~$2500 2.7L "rebuilds" 20 years ago, with zero customer dissatisfaction. I wouldn't do similar today, but there are some talented guys who can get things running fine and fixing to the extent necessary without breaking the bank. Sure, can be tough to find them.

Does your car have Carrera type chain tensioners? $550.00 or so
What is the condition of your clutch? $1000.00 or so
How many miles do you have on your car?
What is the condition of your fan and fan housing? (cracking, etc)
Is your alternator OK?
Is your flywheel within factory specifications?
What condition are your camshafts in, are they pitted?
What condition is your exhaust and muffler in?
What is the condition of your engine sound pad? $150.00 or so
What is the condition of your motor mounts? $100.00 or so
What is the condition of your ignition distributor?
What is the condition of your ignition distributor vacuum pot?
Are you interested in more power?
Possible porting of cylinder heads for more power
Possible other camshaft profiles for more power
What is the condition of your gearbox/Syncronizers etc?
We recommend a Carrera oil pump, these are $1000.00 or so.

I think the intake/exhaust valve estimate is a bit high...

John,

YIKES !!!

For that kind of money I think I'd end up making the existing engine into a coffee table, part out the rest of the chassis, and start looking for another car.

That's a no expense spaired rebuild.

Some prices are a little out of round.

I think most are using RACEWARE rod bolts now.

10K should rebuld your motor just fine unless you want extras, as long as it's not blown up.

"Complete"? $10K if you do the work, $14-15K if you have someone do it. Steve is excellent by all counts, and there are some good SoCal options too.

You can call my friend, a retired Porsche mechanic (dealer wrench), who has been rebuilding Porsche motors since the 1970s. You'd have to drive the motor over to his house in another vehicle, but lots of people have done that.
