Default New to site (kinda)

Just introducing myself, I had a 951 about a year ago that I built to around 380-400hp at the wheels depending on boost and how hard I wanted to push it.
But I made the big mistake of selling the car and have been kicking myself eversince
So a 86 Carrera came into the dealer for an unbelivable price so I had to pull the trigger.

Car has 77k on it no body or paint work and the car looks like it came off of the showroom floor. The only issue is 1st gear syncro is gone. I can live with that till I get the time to pull the eng/trans and go thru it.
Picked the car up for $8600, I had always wanted a 911 chassis but could never find an exceptional car till now.
Absolutly love the way they drive.

I've serviced and maintained a few of these older chassis 911's for customers and now I see why they love them so much

Well at that purchase price you've got lots of $$ left over to fix the trans. Why didn't I find a deal like that when I was looking? I paid $20.5K for an 88 Coupe in very nice condition and was happy.

Mines Identical to the one you have in your picture.
I heard the price on it and ran to the bank. I had been trying to sell my other toy to fund my next car but this was one of those too good to pass deals.
I was amazed that they would even allow me to buy it for that price.
The salesmen were'nt too happy about it, they lost a big commision on the sale to an employee.

Geartech,
Be patient with the transmisssion thing. As you drive the car, you may find you have less trouble operating it. The 915 gear box is sort of like trying to dance ballet with a sumo wrestler. You may want it to move faster than it wants to, but I would suggest letting it lead . These things are nothing like a 944 transmission. I'm not exactly sure what you need a first gear syncro for at all, most of the "experts" will tell you never to put it in first gear while the car is moving. I found with my '83 that the only way I could shift down into first gear while moving was to double clutch and rev match. My trans only had 10k miles on a rebuild.

Congrats on the purchase! Welcome to the group, and for your own sake post some pictures before the lynch mob comes after you

Will do on the pics, The main reason for fixing the trans is if I decide to resell the car I'd like it to be as close to perfect as possible. I'd like to keep it for a year and then trade up to a 930 car. Allways liked the turbo cars. I'd love to find a nice 930s. But it seems the more I drive this car the more I fall in love with it. Really couldn't go wrong either way though.

I'm still new to the Porsche thing but wasn't '86 the transition year from the 915 to the G50? So, which do you have? I personally could not get comfortable with any of the 915's I drove but others have no issues. So, it's just a personal thing. I like a smooth, easy-shifting trans.

'86 has the 915.

Porsche installed 5-speed G50s in the 87-89 cars and 6-speed G50s in the 90-98 cars.

For little time and money, new shifter/coupler bushings and adjusting the coupler went a long way in cleaning my sloppy feeling 915. And- just getting used to that pregnant pause between 1-2 and learning to squeak back into first just before the car comes to a stop.
