Default I sort of have a valve tap.

I readjusted my valves on my 1985 Carrera myself because the shop with a great reputation I brought it to to have it done screwed it up, and I had some taps. Now at idle all the valves are silent, but when I rev the engine I get a little tap from one valve. Once the engine gets back to idle the valve quiets down. Is the gap on the valve still too large? should I adjust it again?

You might take a mechanics stethescope, or a long screwdriver, and press the blunt end against your closed ear. Try to find the source of the noise first. It could be the chain tensioner, I hope not.

Carlo,

There are several sources that can make valve noise including excessive valve clearance, worn rocker arm bushings, worn rocker shafts and worn adjusting screws, and of course, worn guides.

JMHO, but I'd be careful about adjusting valves until they are silent. Loose valves will not do anything but make some noise, but tight ones will cost you some $$$$.

Thanks, that is what I wanted to hear. I will adjust them one more time being careful not to make them too tight. Then live with what I have.

One thing that I picked up from Grady Clay, and I'd like to hear what Steve does:

Using PB Blaster, or similar, you "wash" the cam love of oil on the valve you are adjusting, thereby allowing the rocker to truly touch the cam lobe-then adjust. After that, a squirt of motor oil on the cam to put a film back on. Move on to the next, rinse and repeat. As Steve notes, tight us not good, and you take some pad away by doing this method, but you get a more accurate .1mm clearance.

Try a piece of coathanger wire bent straight with a piece of plastic or something slipped onto one end, then place the other end against the chain tensioner cover. You should be able to hear the chains running on the tensioner pulley. You can also hear the valve tappets/ adjuster foot and fuel injection running as well.

What makes me wonder about the above problem is that the noise is louder when the rpms increase.

Quick Reply: I sort of have a valve tap.
