Default 86 911 turbo coupe. Gotchas, thoughts, prices?

I'm a 928 guy, but this car caught my fancy. I recall when they came out we called them the whale tail.

What are the things to watch out for, and if anyone knows this car(unlikely) please speak up.

Not to detract, but for that kind of $$ you can get a low mileage, clean 996 turbo with all the bells and whistles.

I know its apples/oranges but just another datapoint.

Or a 965 which is a much more sorted package for ride and handling while keeping the traditional styling. I had a 91 that was my favorite pcar and still is.

I kinda want a pure air cooled guy. Although I agree it's a bit on the top end cost wise.

Anyone have any specifics to look at?

You want to have a very through PPI, you also want to understand any mods from stock as they reduce the value of collectors grade 930, that's a lot of money for that car but if you love it it's only money.

The exhaust isn't stock, but the engine looks original.

You might want to post in the 930 section to get a reaction. Good luck.

wow, great looking car. Looks like it has been cleaned up well for show - look at the drivers side door and rear seat pics. That looks like more that 27,000 original miles wear and tear to me. Judging from the other cars in the shop, these guys might not know their porsche's. Maybe you can get them to come down. Sweet car though - this is exactly what I would want a 930 to look like if I had one.

Ah, I see. This should go down in the 911 Turbo section. If there's a mod out there, could you move this please? My bad.

Just click on the picture and it brings up a static detailed picture. At least it does for me.

930s were usually pretty well-opted cars - I would want sport seats. Exhaust looks aftermarket, which is typically good, but it would be nice to know what else has been done. There are endless choices in that price range, all suggestions above are good although a 996 TT is a different(lesser) caliber of car in my opinion. You have to be careful with these collector car guys, they can pretty-up a wholesale find while dredging for a sucker(I love the generic descriptions: 4 wheel power disc brakes0. Private owner purchase is usually safe at this level.

Thanks, Tom! I was clicking on the small, lower pics and it wouldn't pause! Got it now...

doc, some things to consider:
1. Ask why/when the speedo/odo was out of the car. It's installed crooked, so it was definitely removed.
2. Dash top is junk. Car is way too expensive to have to replace a $1500 dash after you buy the car.
3. The car has a factory alarm, are the keys for it included?
4. The gear lever **** is crooked; why?
5. Does the sale include the stock muffler and catalytic converter? These are super-expensive parts and you need them to register the car in many states.
6. The leather on the rear seats and left door panel trim cap look pretty badly scuffed, kinda manes me wonder abount the claimed mileage.

Positives:
1. VIN sticker on left door post indicates no re-paint work on that side of the car.
2. Original sticker on right door post indicates no paint work on that side of the car.
3. Engine compartment looks good, based on what I can see.

Thoughts:
1. Make sure that you drive the car before doing any negotiations, etc. '86 Turbos are extremely sluggish at low revs, and you really can't fix that. Get used to it, yes; fix it, no.
2. Really think about the price.
3. PPI, PPI, PPI!!!

They're a hotrod consignment place. Good thing is that Denny Kahler's longtime established Porsche shop (well, whoever owns it now) is within walking distance up the street, so a PPI would be a slam-dunk.

Agree about the exhaust. If the cat is off, no sale in CA. (But I happen to have a couple, and stock mufflers laying around..........)

Ultimately, at that price there have to be many other options out there for torsion bar turbos. And if you haven't driven a factory stock 4 speed car, maybe spend some time in one to see if it's really what you think it is?
