Default Need opinion on a '88 Carrera 3.2

Thank you for all the responses to my earlier post on the 3.2 Carrera driving experience. I am currently looking at a '88 3.2 with G-50 tranny, totally stock, guards red, mint condition interior/exterior, 3rd owner who states that he has all maintenance records available. No major repairs/rebuilds. Has 63K miles, wants $ 28,500. Way beyond my budget (I would have to spend money on air travel/cost of shipping/PPI) and was going to offer $24K (provided everything checks out well with the PPI). Am I out of line on my thinking...or is even 24K too much. I am in no hurry for another car, so the only reason that I would feel rushed is a rapidly evaporating inventory of well kept classic 3.2's with G50's. The guy tells me that the 88's were so much better than the first year G50's ...my Pete Zimmermann's carrera buying guides are en-route from Amazon.

Ed: Thank you for posting the link. I do not mind if a fellow rennlister benefits from this post. Even considering the fact that these cars are on the other side of the depreciation curve, the price seems too much in my opinion but would like to know what the fellow members feel.

Where did the stock wheels go in 63K miles? Those don't look like 8"s to me. I don't care for the hoop thing either, but it looks like a nice enough car. I think $25 might be the most I'd pay for a time capsule 911, which this at first glance is not.

993. Hated mine - removed it. Why anyone would go out of their way to add that wart to the back of that beautiful car is beyond me.

Cheers,
Joe

Those wheels in the pictures are 6s and 7s, which would have been on 95% of the '88s in the U.S. showrooms when new. Those wheels have been chromed/polished, but are likely the originals.

As far as price, I think offering $24K would be very generous. I'd be surprised if the seller didn't jump on that.

IMO it's a 22K car in a private sale, tops. I'd personally deduct for the polished wheels (not a huge deal) and that crazy hoop thingy (that'd personally probably be a deal killer for me, esp. if it is an original paint car - which it should be at this premium price range. I couldn't live with that thing on, I'd have to take it off, that's going to require some filling and paint work etc.)

Great points guys. M491, I appreciate your honest opinion. Here is the wheel pic. It was my understanding that they were stock wheels. Correct me if I am wrong after seeing the picture. I certainly do not like the look of that hoopy thing. In fact I am only looking at cars without the whale tails. I have not made any offers yet. I thought that the seller would be insulated if I offered 22K...but that's why I turn to (and look up to) you all in this great forum. As I told you, I am in no hurry. BTW, it is original paint.

As a reference point, bought my '88 targa last summer, 62+K miles for $22K, I think asking was around $24K. Had looked for an '88 targa for about six months, it was a local car so I was "saving" on shipping and car had been serviced at same shop I was already using. They knew the car, did the PPI which was fine and thought that I was over paying by about $1K... however was already was emotionally attached to the car and went for it. Coupes generally go for a little more than a targa. Market place may be a little better now than last summer but I think it is still a buyers market. You could make an offer contingent on the PPI and work down on price when you both get the results.

Re: the wheels someone had to pay to have those re-done and seller may not be receptive to lowering price due to the wheels (he may have had them chromed) now that hoop thing....

Don't forget a good PPI

Just spoke to the seller...I offered 22K, he said no way...told him the max I would pay is 23K contingent on the PPI with the intent of working down on price based on PPI results. He seemed more comfortable with that offer, just wants a couple of days time. He tells me that the spoiler has brake lights and is real easy to remove. I will find out when I get the PPI as to how much it will cost to remove it..and will have him foot the bill for that. The interior pics he sent me had me sold on it. Guards red was also one of the colors of my choice.
